funds for county’s rough sleepers
EXTRA money will be made available to help Cornwall’s rough sleep- ers, the county coun- cil’s cabinet members have agreed.
It has recommended that £850,000 from Cornwall Housing’s re- serves be used to fund additional services to help the homeless get off the streets.
Figures show that on one night in November last year, there were 99 people sleeping rough in Cornwall – a signifi- cant increase on the 65 reported in 2015.
Cornwall Council cab- inet member for hous- ing and environment Joyce Duffin said: ‘Ob- viously it is not good news that we have seen a significant increase in the number of rough sleepers in Cornwall. ‘Tackling rough sleep- ing is a key priority for the council and strong and effective partner- ships are in place to de- velop a range of re- sponses. This includes immediate, medium and long-term activities to strengthen services across Cornwall, in terms of both the pre- vention of rough sleep- ing, and responding to existing rough sleep- ers.’

have cancer screening
Women are urged to
Concern younger women not going to clinics due to embarrassment
YOUNGER women in Cornwall are being urged not to let embarrassment prevent them from having cancer screening. The NHS says that the number of women aged 25-29 who are being screened for cervical cancer is the lowest in any age group.
In Cornwall, 71.6 per cent of women aged 25-29 have undergone screening in the past five years, meaning 4,446 have not been screened.
The uptake for women aged between 25 and 64 in the county stands at 78.2 per cent. Though this percentage is higher, it still means 29,339 women were not screened in the five years up to the sum- mer of 2016. Surveys by cancer charities indicate that embarrassment and a lack of under- standing of the causes of cervical cancer may be among the reasons why the women don’t go for screening. Cervical cancer is the most common cancer in women under 35, but is largely preventable thanks to screening and the
HPV vaccination programme.
The NHS and Public Health England have highlighted the screening pro- gramme as part of their support for Euro- pean Cervical Cancer Prevention Week which runs until tomorrow.
Decline
Dr Julie Yates, who is involved in screening, said: ‘We have noticed a fall in attendance of younger women over the past few years, and this decline in atten- dance for screening is now linked to showing a rise in the incidence of cervi- cal cancer in women under 35. ‘It is really important for young women to understand the importance of attend- ing cervical screening when they receive a letter from their GP as it can detect pre- cancer abnormalities, which, if left un- treated, may develop into cancer.’ The majority of women diagnosed with
cervical cancer have delayed coming forward for screening.
SANCTUARY Group has big plans for building in the county
HOUSING association Sanctuary Group has announced it will be build- ing more than 550 new homes in Corn- wall and the Isles of Scilly.
Almost 400 of the new properties will be for shared ownership. Grant funding from the Homes and Communities Agency will contribute towards the cost of around 250 of these.
No detail is available, as yet, regard-
ing the location of the new homes, which will be constructed between now and 2021.
Sanctuary Group director Peter Mar- tin said: ‘We are delighted to be devel- oping these much-needed homes in Cornwall. Our work in the area forms part of our wider national plans to build 30,000 homes in England and Scotland by 2026.’
Trainee gains scholarship
A STUDENT from Camborne has been awarded a QUEST scholarship from the Institution of Civil Engineers South West (ICE). Tom James, a trainee technician for
CORMAC solutions and a part-time stu- dent at City College Plymouth, said: ‘Be- ing awarded the scholarship was an in- credibly proud moment for me. I am relatively new to civil engineering, hav- ing started my trainee technician role in September, so to have achieved this so early on in my career means a great deal.’
The Queen’s Jubilee Scholarship Trust (QUEST) was set up to provide financial support for engineering students in fur- ther or higher education, while they are also obtaining technical and practical en- gineering experience with employers. Regional Director Miranda Housden said: ‘QUEST scholarships are awarded to those achieving and striving for the high- est standards. All our new scholars have shown a great enthusiasm for engineer- ing and will use the scholarship to aid them in their studies.’
