Off the bottle

In October we dug a very big hole at Wigley Orchard and buried two large gas tanks. The downside was lots of mud and mess throughout the winter, but the plus side is that we can now forget about ever again de- livering large, awkward and heavy cylin- ders of gas around the park.

Brian’s brother Edward and his wife Julie live in New Zealand and they keep sheep. Not thousands or even hundreds of sheep but just nine – nine of the maddest sheep you could wish to meet. During our recent holiday in NZ we got to know them quite well. Edward and Julie live on a lifestyle block

just south of Auckland. They go to work in the city every day, but in the evening they come home to their sprawling bungalow set in five acres of beautiful gardens and orchards with impenetrable bush rising precipitously behind the house, where the sheep are waiting ... Mrs Black, Pamela and The Other One are

the oldest. Mrs Black, a Suffolk with a mad look in her eye, is the prima donna of the troupe, always ready for her close-up, striking a pose on elegant black-stockinged legs. The Other One is clearly so insignificant they did- n't bother to name her at all. Abigail and twins Angus and Arbuthnot

are the next oldest. Angus is the ram, big, handsome and horny but ready to butt anyone

who turns their back, especially if they're car- rying sheep treats. Julie is a little bit afraid of him and he knows it. Arbuthnot is an escape artist extraordinaire who can jump fences and disappear into the bush. How high can a sheep jump? How high is the fence? The youngest are Bethany, Bianca and baby

Bryan (with a ‘y’), the littlest and the cutest with his whiskery face and little woolly legs. The sheep have three paddocks, one beside

the house and two very steep ones in the bush. Edward spends hours mending the fencing but it's hard to keep the sheep in and they

All change at Wigley

During the winter we have sold eight older holiday homes off site. These have been re- placed by the two upgrades and the three new units listed above. We plan to site a twin unit lodge on pitch 170 in the spring. This will leave two empty pitches. You

can choose any new model you like to be sited here!

spend much of their time finding escape routes and exploring the bush, bothering the neigh- bour's horses or even marching down the drive and into the road, bags packed and off looking for adventure. They spend time in the orchard too where

they like eating lemons and jumping to pull the unripe apples from the trees. How high can a sheep jump? How high is the apple? When they're allowed to roam free in the garden they're fond of climbing onto the terrace and would probably like to come indoors if they could. After a particularly challenging couple of

weeks Edward has decided to sell some of the sheep, although Julie says that Mrs Black and Bryan (with a ‘y’) (“he's so cute”) must stay. So they are advertised on Trade Me, the NZ equivalent of eBay – “Save Angus from the butcher's knife” –who can resist? If you would like to give a home to a mad New Zealand sheep, just let us know and we'll tell Edward. Buyer collects!

The best day of our grandson Henry’s life was Boxing Day 2016 when his godfather Andy took him to the Emirates Stadium to watch Ar- senal. Although he lives in America Henry is an avid follower of Premiership football and he and his father both support Arsenal. Meanwhile we had a fabulous holiday in

New Zealand (see below), and as soon as we came home John and Hannah took off for the slopes of Flachau in Austria, where they had lots of fun in the snow!
