www.hamptonroadsmessenger.com Dominion donates to Franklin-
based nonprofit organization Suffolk, Va.- Dominion Foundation, a charity branch of Dominion Resources, awarded Cover 3 Foundation a $5,000 grant to go towards one of their projects called C3’s Kids’ Meals Program.
Cover 3 assists children in Western Tidewater and Central Virginia and serves them healthy meals outside of the hours of school. This is the time when children suffer the most from instability of food intake.
Greg Scott, the CEO and Founder of Cover 3 Foundation, has announced that they supplied over 250,000 meals last year. Each of the meals they provide is approved by the Virginia Department of Health.
Last year, the Dominion Foundation granted $1 million to over 100 different nonprofit organizations. They award these grants to address the many needs of the community. Their foundation generally gives to programs that focus on providing shelter, food, and healthcare to those in need and over 300 applications were examined based on those aspects.
Plan developed for Virginia Beach
to keep light rail money Virginia Beach, Va.- Most voters in the city have voted against a light rail than would span nearly 11 miles.
The vote, where 57 percent of the people who voted did so against the light rail, took place in November of last year.
This strip of railroad was bought for $20 million from the state specifically for light rail. Now that it has been rejected, the city has been told to find a way to use the land or pay back the money.
The city will only be able to keep the money, if they plan to build a larger scale public transit system on the land in the future. The city council must agree to the proposal. If not, the city must pay back the $20 million given by the state and an additional $5 million back to the federal government. The city will be given ample time to decide because the deal will not be made with a deadline.
Mayor Will Sessoms is planning to have council vote on it February 7th.
Virginia Beach will be able to choose the type of transportation they want to showcase on the land. They have been presenting different ideas to the council members to try to get them on board. The proposal was introduced to the council since January of last year.
The current railroad stretches from Newtown Road to Norfolk Avenue. If council approves the plan on Tuesday, the first part of the track built will have a connection to Constitution Drive. The other part will connect to London Bridge.
The city has a lot of plans for expansion including different bike trails and crossings that have not been introduced to the public for their opinion.
Councilwoman Barbara Henley thinks that they should look to the community and see how they feel about the many changes that could be happening for the city before moving forward on these plans. This could avoid another situation similar to what they are experiencing now.
