2 This month, The Window...

In this month’s The Window, we look at the im- portance of children and the key initiatives that are taking place in Abingdon and the surrounding area to support children in their spiritual develop- ment. Please consider Carol’s invitation – is in- volvement in ministry to children and schools something you could consider?

We also celebrate the achievement of four of our choristers in their recent RSCM awards. Else- where we focus on the work of Sir George Gil- bert Scott, architect of St Michael’s church and next month we hope to have a report of the much- anticipated 150 anniversary dedication mass.

News from the Parish Christingle Service

A record congregation filled St Helen’s on Christmas Eve for the Christingle Service at 4.30 pm. Despite concerns, there were still a number of the 500 Christingles left at the end of the service. The collection raised £910 for The Children’s Society. Thank you.

St Peter’s Chorale

St Helen’s was delighted to welcome the St Peter’s Chorale as part of their UK and European Tour on Friday 6 January. The Chorale from Brisbane, Australia sang a beautiful collection of sacred and secular pieces. Most interesting were those from Australian composers, one of which by Michael Orlovich was inspired by a poem inspired by the paint- ing ‘My Nurse and I’ by Frida Kahlo, the middle section beginning and ending with onomatopoeic choral sounds of water and forest birds.

Town Twinning Holiday and Friendship in Belgium

Sint Niklaas, our twinned town in Belgium, is celebrating 800 years of being a city in 2017. We are invited to visit from Thurs 1st to Mon 5th June 2017, over Pentecost. Our hosts will accommodate us with friendly local families (or hotels by private arrangement) and arrange a Christian-based programme of events and trips. As well as an inexpensive and interesting holiday, the visit extends truly ecumenical friendship and discussion. Flemish is not nec-

essary! Numbers are limited. If you are interested please contact Eileen Bontempelli at epkbontempelli@gmail.com.
