their musical traditions. Story after story arrived in my inbox, and I realized I would be compiling more than one book. I received nearly 1,000 submissions again in 2016, in preparation for Volume 2, and I have no doubt this trend could go on forever because music truly touches people and changes lives.

As part of creating the Stories of Music series, it was also important to me to support nonprofit

organizations that are increasing access to music. I have been inspired by the work of two organizations in particular: Hungry for Music, which donates quality musical instruments to underserved children with willing instructors and a hunger to play, and Music & Memory, which brings personalized music into the lives of the elderly or infirm using digital music technology. Both of these organizations are making a global difference, spreading the joy of music to those who need it most. To give back to their efforts, I am donating ten percent of proceeds from the Stories of Music books to Hungry for Music and Music & Memory. Your purchase of this book helps me to do this, and I invite you to support these organizations further by visiting their websites: www.hungryformusic.org and www.musicandmemory.org. Music, I am learning, is rooted even more deeply in our lives—both individually and

collectively—than I ever imagined. I have been overjoyed to discover how people are experiencing— and celebrating—music’s many gifts. Little did I know when I began this effort that it would take on a life of its own because, I think you will agree, there’s no end to the power of music. I hope I can continue bringing you these uplifting stories for years to come.
