SEVILLE
HIDDEN GEMS Seville isn’t just about the sights, nightlife and scenery, impressive as they are. The city excels in all things culinary, offering an array of tapas bars and outdoor restaurants which serve up local dishes such as cured Iberian ham, ensaladilla (creamy potato salad) and gazpacho. There are plenty of hidden food gems too, including in the convents, where nuns sell homemade cakes and sweets – try the yemas of San Leandro, confectionery made with egg yolk.
KEY HIGHLIGHTS
As the capital of Spain’s southern region Andalucia, Seville boasts sunny skies throughout the year. That means visitors can enjoy the local beer al fresco and make the most of the fact the city is home to one of Spain’s most famous breweries, even in autumn and winter. Seville is also flat, so you can easily cycle around it to explore the local sights. Recommended stops include Maria Luisa’s park, home to the spectacular Plaza de España, and the Museum of Folklore and Arts.
UNIQUE SELLING POINTS Spain is well-known for its flamenco, but it was in Seville and the region that it began. Every even year, in recognition of its heritage, the city hosts the Bienal de Flamenco, the largest flamenco festival in the world. A visit here wouldn’t be complete without seeing a performance and there are nearly a hundred every day in the city, with each flamenco venue (tablao) usually hosting two or three a day. Shows take place in certain bars and historic palaces, as well as at the flamenco dance museum.
