Empress Elizabeth of Russia, a daughter of Peter the Great, is an imposing building of superlatives. The residence of the Russian monarchs up to the Russian Revolution, it is not only one of the world’s largest royal palaces, but also home to the Hermitage Museum, one of the fi nest and most important collections of art. dral of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, built on the site where Tsar Alexander II was assassinated in 1881 – which is why it is also known as the Church of the Saviour on Blood. Both inside and outside walls are covered in large mosaics.
