The WCA network has signed a cooperation deal with Alibaba.com to integrate approved WCA member companies integrated into the online retailer’s logistics platform for cross-border shipments to the UK, US and India. WCA will provide, vet and approve international logistics providers who will have full access to compete for logistics orders generated on the Alibaba.com platform.


Allport Cargo Services and TIC Reverse Logistics have joined forces to create ACS Reverse Logistics for UK retailers and online stores. The joint venture will use proprietary technology to deliver reverse logistics solutions.


Allport has developed


a strong relationship with Australian-based TIC which has been at the forefront of creating downstream opportunities and industries for products otherwise destined for landfill. It gives retailers control and intelligence on store returns, recall products, damaged stock, sale and consignment merchandise.


UK groupage operator Europa Road has signed new partnership agreements for Spain, the Netherlands and Portugal. In Spain, Europa will be working with Turkish owned Ekol, to enhance its routes, in particular to Barcelona. In the Netherlands, Europa will be working with Tilburg-based BF Global and will continue to operate two daily trips to and from Dartford to Tilburg. Europa’s new partner in Portugal is Abreu Carga.


Gefco Forwarding UK has moved its Humanitarian Relief Logistics headquarters to a new facility at EuroCentral, near Glasgow, and has appointed Ben Cunnington to head the new division.


AV Dawson owner and partner, Maurice Dawson has died, aged 75. He led the Middlesbrough-based logistics firm, founded in 1938 by his parents, through a significant phase in its growth. The former diesel fitter apprentice spent years as a long-distance lorry driver before becoming joint managing director at AV Dawson alongside his mother, Eleanor, overseeing its successes for a number of years before eventually handing over the reins to his son, Gary Dawson.


Freight forwarder Röhlig UK has appointed Mark Conway (leſt) and Rob Lawry to its commercial team. Mark Conway brings 20 years’ experience in the business and Rob Lawry 18 years. Their appointments are part of the Röhlig UK operational excellence strategy, which focusses on serving customers throughout its global Röhlig network and enables them to reach their business goals.


Agility has extended its partnership with ExCeL London to 2019. As the venue and exhibition centres’s official logistics partner, Agility Fairs & Events is the only logistics company with staff offices and warehouse facilities on-site.


The Deutsche Post board has reappointed chief executive Frank Appel for another five years until October 2022. He has been a member of the management board of Deutsche Post DHL Group since 2002 and chief executive since 2008.


DHL eCommerce has joined forces with Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce to help the country’s farmers beat a rice glut. The Deutsche Post division will offer its expertise and logistics services free for four months to help Thai farmers grow their business and reap the benefits from selling on e-commerce platforms. This follows recent challenging market conditions which have seen an oversupply of rice and strong export competition.

The European Commission adopted on 21 December a plan for management of the Customs Union, which came into force in May 2016. It noted that while the rules may be the same across the EU, customs authorities do not always apply them uniformly and called for member states to work towards acting as one single entity while increasing cooperation

Nepal has ratified the World Trade Organisation’s Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA), becoming the 108th WTO member to do so and only two more ratifications are now needed to make it a reality. The TFA will enter into force once two- thirds of the WTO membership has formally accepted it. Concluded at the WTO’s 2013 Bali Ministerial Conference, the TFA aims to expedite the movement, release and clearance of goods,

including goods in transit, along with provisions for technical assistance and capacity building. According to a 2015 study, TFA would reduce trade costs by an average 14.3%, with developing countries having the most to gain. It could also reduce the time to import goods by over a day and a half and for exports by almost two days and help increase global merchandise exports by up to $1 trillion.
