London marina renovated by Poralu

M

arina equipment manufacturer Poralu Marine, which specialises in top-of-the-range

harbour facilities, has been awarded control of a project for the renovation of a marina at St Katharine Docks on the River Thames in the heart of London. A year after the Brooklyn Bridge Park Marina site, at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge in New York, this is the development of another of the most famous urban sites in the world that has been entrusted to this French company. The operation has been carried out in conjunction with Inland and Coastal Marina Systems (ICMS) of Ireland, which was made responsible for providing the logistics and installation. St Katharine Docks, situated

in the Tower Hamlets district of London, are old docks that have served London since 1828. They are spread over three basins and overlook the North Bank of the Thames, to the East (downstream) of the Tower of London and Tower Bridge. They are part of the Port of London and are today restored as offices, housing and premises for leisure activities, whilst the basins now accommodate marinas. St Katharine Docks is being

completely renovated with curved

pontoons in natural wood, which follow the shape of the quay, and Premium gates bearing the Poralu Marine signature. Dismantling existing facilities, putting new equipment in place, installing Maricer pedestals (see pages 14- 15) have all raised extraordinary logistical challenges. Due to the marina’s location in this high-end

residential area, which is also very busy with many bars, projects need to be carried out with a degree of discretion. In addition, the very dense traffic in the British capital makes access difficult for heavy goods vehicles delivering construction materials. Finally, many residential boats are moored permanently in this marina
