taken is not known but it is thought probable that she may have gone to New London, Connecticut. Bound from Brunswick, Georgia, for

Portland, Maine, with a cargo of lumber, the schooner S. G. HASKELL went ashore on Handkerchief shoals January 24, in a heavy gale. She had been stripped of all her rigging and part of her cargo taken off during the past week, the schooner having completely crossed the shoal before she was fl oated.

5 January 1911 Schooner Ashore May Be the SILVERHEELS

Chatham, Massachusetts, January 5 – A

two-masted schooner, whose name appeared to shore observers to be SILVERHEELS, ran aground on the fl ats on the inside of Shovelful lightship at high tide Thursday afternoon. There was a strong wind blowing from the northwest at the time. The schooner appeared to be laden with laths and was bound west. Capt. Kelley and his crew of life saver

from the Monomoy Point station launched their boat on the inside of the point and started on a pull around the end of the point to the assistance of the craft which lay about half a mile from the beach and a mile or more from the life saving station. The schooner SILVERHEELS was built at Tremont, Maine, in 1872. She registers 103 tons net and carries a crew of four men. Her hailing port is Rockland, Maine.

7 January 1911 Vessel on Thumb Cap is Schooner RED JACKET

Boothbay Harbor, January 7. The little coasting schooner RED

JACKET of Rockland, Capt. James K. Tibbetts was wrecked early Saturday on Thumb Cap island at the entrance of Damariscotta River and will be a total loss. The crew of four men found shelter in a summer cottage on the island, where they remained all night and planned to return Saturday night to this port with the wrecking crew which responded to distress signals. The schooner was light and sailed from

here Friday for Rockland. A thick snow storm and heavy wind caught the crew and cast them on the rocky island which faces the open sea. As it was high tide they were carried well up on the islands. The RED JACKET was built at Camden in 1860 and registered 110 net tonnage. * * * * *

Schooner High and Dry on Thumb Cap Island

Boothbay Harbor, January 7. Lobstermen brought in the information

that a two-masted schooner was stranded high and dry Saturday morning on Thumb Cap Island at the morning of the Damariscotta River. The schooner was exposed to the open sea and it was quite rough. An eff ort was made to notify the revenue cutter WOODBURY, which was at Southwest Harbor late Friday night and possibly Saturday. The crew of the lobster schooner ALBERT BLACK reported

the schooner was of about 125 tons and light, also that her sails were lowered and distress signals were fl ying. The schooner was lying in one of the most dangerous places around here. Several lobster men from South Bristol and a power boat from here started out shortly before noon to investigate and render assistance to the crew if possible. * * * * *

Schooner SILVER HEELS of Rockland Abandoned

Chatham, Massachusetts, January 7 –

The Rockland, Maine, schooner SILVER HEELS, after 40 years of useful service along the Atlantic coast, has selected the shifting sands of Nantucket shoals as her last resting place, orders having been given Saturday to abandon her. The SILVER HEELS was edging her

way from a New Brunswick port to New York with a cargo of laths, when her skipper tacked too far in shore after passing Shovelful lightship last Thursday and the schooner struck on the bar that makes out just to the southward of Monomoy Point lighthouse. The life savers and the revenue cutter

GRESHAM worked all day Friday trying to drag her into deeper water, and two big hawsers were parted before the attempt was given up. A band of Chatham wreckers will save

what they can for the owners but a greater part of the SILVER HEELS will be swallowed up by the shifting sands to mingle with the bones of hundreds of other unfortunate coasters.
