Elf Cup Lichen is also known by it's latin name; Cladonia Coccifera. Many Cladonia species are known to have antibiotic properties and the British Lichen Society recently reported that research is currently being undertaken in this area in that hope that it will be proven safe for modern use. Lichen are a slow growing symbiotic combination of fungi and algae, they are resistant to radiation and in one experiment they survived 1000 rads (a single exposure of 400 rads will kill a person) a day for nearly two years from a distance of 8 m and continued to grow.
