New members join the team as business continues to grow
ZOE Richardson-Wright took over at The Power Studio at The Old Forge, Martlesham, in April this year. Having worked for the previous owner for eight years, Zoe has plenty of experi- ence and is a fully accredited Power Plate instructor. She is a familiar face in the area having also worked as a dance and fit- ness instructor for many years. The Power Studio is an
exclusive fitness studio offer- ing clients access to state of the art Power Plate technology. Power Plate uses vibration acceleration training and just 30 minutes gives equivalent results of one hour of training using traditional methods. Over the past few months the number of clients has grown significantly so Zoe is now joined in the studio by Jenny Chambers and Hayley Church- yard. Zoe explains that this tech-
nique is great for core strength and balance and is ideal for all ages. The team will design a personalised programme tai- lored to each client to help them achieve their own personal goal – whatever that may be. The studio is bright and spa- cious and operates a strict booking system meaning that one of the three machines will always be available when you turn up for your slot. All newcomers have a com-
plete induction. This begins by completing a medical card to
ensure clients don’t have any pre-existing medical condi- tions that would make Power Plate training unsuitable. If either Zoe or the client has any concerns, they will consult a doctor or the medical team at Power Plate. That said, this is a low impact form of training and Zoe can adapt and create plans to suit all ages and abili- ties. Upon entering the Power
Studio you will see the studio to the right and the reception area is in front of you. Just beyond the reception area is where you will find Cloud 9 Hair Studio. Lorraine Ignos, known to everyone as Rainy, opened the studio mid-June. Over the last few years Rainy has worked at a number of local salons. However, the time seemed right to set up on her own and when she heard of the space here at The Old Forge she jumped at the chance. Just as with The Power Stu-
dio, Cloud 9 has also seen a big increase in the number of cli- ents visiting the salon and so like Zoe, Rainy has also taken on new members of staff to cope with increased demand. Along with Rainy you will now find, Nikki White, Sam Creasey and Connie Smy at Cloud 9. All are fully qualified and have worked in the area for many years. As you would expect, the team at Cloud 9 cover all

aspects of hairdressing for both ladies and gents of all ages; whether it is a wash, cut and style; tints; full head foils; root retouch or perming. Cloud 9 is open Tuesday to Saturday and the team are happy to accom- modate walk-ins, but it is advisable to call in advance. However, if you were to turn up
and have to wait, it is not the end of the world as you can sit back and relax with a cup of coffee. Speaking of looking your
best, Rainy specialises in wed- ding hair. Bridal parties are welcome to ‘take over’ the salon or if they prefer, Rainy is happy to do it on location. If
you are planning a wedding give Rainy a call to discuss the most important hair-do of your life! The Power Studio and Cloud
9 Hair Studio seem to work perfectly together and the two ladies are good friends which helps create a fun, relaxed and inviting atmosphere. Being
based on the same site has obvious benefits. There is always someone in the building until at least 8pm and of course, all members of staff are on hand to help out with answer- ing phones, taking messages and greeting clients. It is great to see hard-working, dedicated and passionate people doing

MARK Smith, medals expert on the BBC Antiques Roadshow, was the guest speaker at the Rec- tor’s annual ‘Black Tie Do’ on November 18th. Following a superb formal dinner in the Masonic Hall, Mark gave a live- ly talk on his specialist interest, ‘The Story of the Victoria Cross’, and gripped our atten- tion in an almost mesmerising manner for over an hour. Former Curator of the Royal
Artillery Museum, Mark’s pas- sion for medals originated as a childhood hobby and became a career. It began when, aged just six, he was given his father’s wartime medals, which he care- fully arranged on his bedroom shelf – and that was his first dis- play of medals. Later, his father bought him a poster depicting every British medal: ‘Let’s col- lect the lot!’ Mark said enthusi-
astically, and with his father’s help he almost succeeded. Just one, so rare, seemed beyond their reach: it was the Victoria Cross. The Victoria Cross, Mark told
us, was established in response to overwhelming public opin- ion. Ordinary soldiers had been somewhat despised; even Wel- lington had referred to them as ‘the scum of the earth’, and only officers could receive medals. With the Crimean War this all changed. Roger Fenton, one of the first war photographers, and William Howard Russell, war correspondent for The Times, were present at the Charge of the Light Brigade on October 25th 1854. The subsequent photo- graph and searingly vivid account on the front page of The Times a day or two later mobil- ised public opinion so power-

fully that Queen Victoria inau- gurated the Victoria Cross. ‘All my soldiers are brave,’ she said, ‘this medal is for valour in the face of the enemy’, and it was to be awarded to men of any rank. Not only that, but Queen Victo- ria felt so strongly that the medal must be valued for the deed, not the metal, that she ordered it to be fashioned in bronze. Particularly moving were the
stories of the heroes behind each Victoria Cross, of which Mark had researched over 600 and recounted a few to us. The youngest ever VC was just fif- teen. A great many survivors of the action had lifelong injuries, but tragically, of the 1,364 men awarded the VC to date, over 200 have committed suicide from post-traumatic stress, so high was the cost of their cour- age. Just three men have been
awarded the VC twice – not as a second cross, but as a bronze bar sewn to the original ribbon – the extraordinary fact being that they were all cousins! And, yes, in 1990 Mark did at
last manage to buy his own Vic- toria Cross to add to his collec- tion, and brought it with him for us all to see – a tiny thing held in the palm of his hand, represent- ing so much. It was a tremendous privilege
to hear Mark Smith speak – and if you ever get the chance to hear him, seize the opportunity with- out hesitation! Thank you, Canon Kevan McCormack, for initiating such a splendid eve- ning – which, incidentally, raised nearly £700 for church funds.
