Debenham History Society
THE next Debenham History Society lecture will be ‘The Sad Story of Airship R101’ by Geof- frey Kay on Tuesday 10th Janu- ary 2017. In the early part of the twentieth century the future of aviation seemed to belong to air- ships. However, a series of disasters led to their demise. This lecture explains the short
history of the airship, with par- ticular attention being given to the first and last voyage of Air- ship R101. Or, do new develop- ments mean that this story is not yet complete? Held at Room 31, Debenham
High School, Gracechurch Street, Debenham, IP14 6BL commencing at 7.30pm; fee £3
Whip Street Motors Ltd Peter presenting the cheque to Elizabeth Berry
per lecture including a soft drink or tea/coffee in the interval. Enquiries to Clive Cook,

ON Friday 11th November over 90 people attended the Wood- bridge in Bloom autumn fund- raising quiz, held once again at Woodbridge Town Football Club. Much fun was enjoyed, with some hilarious faux pas, before ‘The Fifty Percenters’ emerged as closely-run winners and took the case of wine prize. Thanks are due to our Chair-
man, Judith Wright, who researched the questions and acted as Question Master, to the Football Club for the venue and providing baked potato suppers, and to all who participated. From entrance money and raffle tickets a record surplus of over £700 was made, a fantastic result which will be applied towards our summer bedding plants and hanging baskets in
2017. Look out for our next quiz, in about six months. Many residents of Wood-
bridge and Melton might assume that the tubs, baskets and verges around town are stocked and maintained by the local authori- ty, but this is not the case. Most of our funds come from private sponsors of hanging baskets, and we would welcome further people prepared to do this. Also, our committee and volunteer helpers are small in number, and extra help is always appreciated at spring and autumn planting periods. If you would like to help with this sociable task, please do not hesitate to contact me, Barbara Dann, vice chair- man of Woodbridge in Bloom on 01394 382459 or email: bar-

One Weekend, Five Races - Fram Flyers are everywhere!
THE weekend in question was November 19th and 20th and Framlingham Flyers were com- peting in Lancashire, Cam- bridgeshire and Suffolk over distances from five miles to almost 17 miles. In Barley in Lancashire on the
19th, Darren Sheppard took part in the Tour of Pendle fell race which is run in the south Penines over a distance of 16.8 miles with total ascent of 4,833 feet. This type of racing is quite dif- ficult for runners from Suffolk to
train for as we have very little ground over 483 feet in the county! Add to this the fact that, on the day, it was very cold and there was around six-10 inches of the snow on parts of the course, which added to the fun according to Darren who still managed to finish in the top 25% of the field. On Sunday 20th, 15 Flyers
took part in the Southwold 10k, a very popular event whose 800 entries were filled in around 20 minutes. Joe Carr led the team
home in fifth place, third Senior man. and Peter Russell was third man over 65. There were 696 finishers in total. Also on 20th, at Hadleigh,

eight Flyers ran the five mile event and five tackled the 10 miler. Both of these events are known to be hilly (for Suffolk) but we had some very good results. In the five miles, Will Aldred was first Flyer home in fifth place (second Male over 45). Chris Leek was first male over 40, Marion Walker was first lady over 60 while Linda Aldred and Katie Everett both ran PB’s by around two minutes. In the 10 mile event Jim Last was first Flyer home in third place with Paul Brown second man over 45 and Viv Taylor 2second lady over 60. These were the last events in the annual Suffolk Grand Prix and we await news of final positions in the series. Adam Howlett was the Flyers
sole entrant in the St Neots Half Marathon, also on the 20th. 1,130 runners completed the course on what was a rather windy day for running on an exposed route in Fenland; how- ever, Adam finished a very cred- itable 15th overall. The club also took part in the

Stowmarket Scenic 7 on the 13th with Adam Howlett finishing an excellent second. Peter Russell won the Mens over 65 trophy. On Monday 28th Guy Hayward completed what is billed as the flatest marathon in England - The Viking Coastal Marathon at Birchington in Kent. The race covers four laps of 6.58 miles along the sea wall which, as it was a very windy day, meant that half the distance was run into the wind. However, Guy still managed to lower his best marathon time by over 10 min- utes which is a huge improve- ment, especially given the num- ber of marathons he has run over the past 11 months. Looking forward to 2017 we
will get the year off to a good start with the annual New Year’s Day run from the Sports Club at 10.15am on January 1st then the club starts racing in earnest at the County Cross Country Championships at Hevening- ham Hall on Sunday 8th January with races for all ages from under 11’s to seniors, male and female. Happy Christmas from Fram- lingham Flyers and here’s to a healthy and happy 2017.
