Local Church launches exciting New Projects 0for the community and abroad

THE Elim Pentecostal church in Saxmundham are in the process of beginning exciting new proj- ects both locally in Saxmund- ham and also in Malawi, Africa. Together as a church they are helping to improve people’s lives both here and around the world. They have recently signed up

to be one of the partners of the Tesco fare share project which donates surplus food at the end of each day to a local charity. Picking the food up on a Tues- day evening, it is then distribut-

ed to people in need via the local coffee morning that is held in the Market Hall on Wednesdays from 10am to 12noon. The cof- fee morning is open to all who want to come and have a tea, cof- fee and a chat. Prayer is also available for anyone who would like help with any situation in their lives. There is also a stall selling various bric a brac, books, clothes etc and there are also two other stalls present who sell cakes and jams and marma- lade and honey etc. Many people who live on their own find it an

invaluable time to connect with other people and find support. Anyone who is struggling and

in need of a small food parcel can come in and receive some of the fare share food that is avail- able - making a small donation if they want to. Every week the amount and variety of the food on offer changes but for anyone in need, it is worth going along to see what is there. For the past few years the pas-

tor and teams from the church have been going out regularly to Africa to help support local

churches and the communities. In January the pastor will be going out to Malawi to establish a healing centre and the church in Saxmundham will be helping to support it. Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world and the difference that can be made by volunteers from here is amazing. The ladies going will be taking extra luggage with things to give to the local people in the community such as chil- dren’s toys, pencils, books, read- ing glasses, clothes, toiletries etc. These small items can make

such a big difference in the lives of the people there. Anyone who wishes to donate anything towards what they are doing; either money or items that can be sold or taken out can bring donations to the Mar- ket Hall Coffee Morning on a Wednesday . Pastor Anne says “The Elim

ON January 16th the Alde Valley Suffolk Family History Group will welcome back Geoff White to tell us about some pub names with a difference. His original interest in pubs and their names stems from about 1950 when Whitbread pioneered the resto- ration of pub signs and released miniature replicas as a trade pro- motion. At school he and his friends collected these rather like cigarette cards, and Geoff’s

interest in pub names expanded as a result. Travelling around Kent and East Sussex in the course of his work with British Gas, Geoff was able to photo- graph many pub signs, and although there has been a decline in pictorial pub signs lately, an exception is The White Horse at Sweffling where a new sign was unveiled in December 2015, together with a decorative ale garland. Geoff will be speaking

mostly about unusual names, but with some interesting stories to accompany the illustrations. The meeting will be held at

Snape Village Hall at 2.30pm on Monday 16th January, when visitors will be very welcome. Admission: members £1, visi- tors £3, including tea/coffee and biscuits. For more info, see our website: http://aldevalleyfami- lyhistorygroup.onesuffolk.net/
