Australia is another outstanding example, and in New Zealand it’s more normal to buy a plot of land than to buy a house. This might

of course have a lot to do with the expanses of land available, something which is a foreign concept in many areas of the UK – where the struggle for plots is the biggest issue of all.

Ask an Architect 26 November, Swindon

NSBRC’s Ask an Architect events are held every month and offer self-builders the chance to attend a session with a RIBA chartered architect to discuss matters such as the design of your project, creating extra storage and adding value to your home.

Top Drawer S/S 15 - 17 January, London

Top Drawer is one of the UK’s leading design-led events. The show features a Home section, divided into Interior Accessories, Kitchen & Dining, Furniture & Lighting and Outdoor Living, presenting products from internationally known brands to small start-up companies and “everything in between.” www.topdrawer.co.uk/home

The National Self Build & Renovation Show 29 - 31 January, Swindon

The National Self Build & Renovation Show is a must for all self-builders. It features over 200 exhibitors, live demonstrations, free seminars and the opportunity to meet with architects, designers, experts and other self-builders. www.nsbrc.co.uk/the-national-self-build-and-renovation-show.html

Right to Build might help to change this. It has just been formally enacted as part of the Housing and Planning Act, meaning there is now a duty on councils to at least maintain a register of people looking to self-build. However the Act was introduced in April and only a handful of authorities have got on board – there is a woeful lag in engagement.

What can be done to incentivise or perhaps even penalise local authorities if they don’t comply? Perhaps this needs to be looked at a central level if the Government is to get anywhere near its goals of 20,000 self/custom-built homes by 2020.

In the meantime we can just gaze at the incredible but sadly rare Grand Designs such as John Martin and Noreen Jaafar’s stunning Passivhaus-on-stilts in the trees in Gloucestershire. It was build for £200 per square metre, proving that great projects need not break the bank.

James Parker

However if you look at the figures on how we are doing versus other countries the reality is a bit less rosy. In Germany self-build is the norm, with 60 per cent of home building currently realised via the DIY or custom-build route.
