South Dorset Welcome to SOUTH DORSET

Poole Harbour

The area covered in this section boasts some of the finest coastal scenery in the country and also includes one of our great remaining forests. Bustling seaside towns in the south, quiet woods and country lanes in the north, tranquil rivers and wave-lashed rocky headlands - truly an area where there is something for the whole family to enjoy, whether you are energetic or idle!

Travel south from Dorchester to the coast and discover Purbeck, a gem that is bounded on almost all sides by water and although not an island in the strict meaning of the word, it does convey a feeling that is particularly apt.

Bounded by the England’s first Natural World Heritage Site and Jurassic Coastline, Purbeck stretches from Poole Harbour and Brownsea

Island, birthplace of the Scouting movement to the iconic Durdle Door sea arch and Lulworth Cove, a notable landmark with its narrow entrance and beautiful landlocked lagoon, a glorious spot to spend a hot summer’s day.

Home to some of the country’s finest sandy beaches, diving and water sports, iconic Corfe Castle, great houses, hidden valleys and glorious heathland walks, this south eastern corner of Dorset has long been the favourite of artists, authors and film makers. Aficionados of Enid Blyton and her ‘Toytown’ and ‘Famous Five’ stories will find her inspiration and many locations here amongst some of the best sea views and spectacular scenery along the whole of the south coast.

If your interest in the sea and water is more

inclined towards boating then in Poole Harbour you will find your ideal place. With its sheltered creeks, winding rivers and intriguing islands this is a small boat sailor’s paradise.

If your ideal holiday includes popular beaches and good shops then travel east along the coast and you will arrive in Bournemouth. Golden sands, amusements, a great aquarium and as many shops as even the most hardened shopaholic could ask for.

As a complete contrast head inland again and you will find the leafy glades of the New Forest. Obviously the most popular villages get crowded in the height of summer but even on the busiest Bank Holiday you can walk a short way into the Forest itself to find peace and quiet – coupled with an abundance of wildlife.
