Stone Age to Medieval, a collection of artefacts including dagger-chapes, an Iron Age bucket mount, an Anglo- Saxon chip-carved gilt-bronze mount, silver-gilt brooch buckles (3), bronze seal matrices (8), finger-rings (6), etc [Lot]. Varied state

Iron Age, a group of artefacts (8, mostly bronze), comprising brooches (5, one silver), all La Tene period; a belt toggle, a miniature votive axe and a naked anthropomorphic figure with deep-socketed eyes, in a seated posture, arms forward and hands clasped [8]. All very fine

Roman, a varied collection of fibulæ (50), mostly bronze, including an enamelled trumpet, headstud, rosette, dolphin, crescent type,Æsica type, Alcester type, Kräftig-Profilierte type (this silver), tapering bow, bow-and-fantail, crossbow, knee-brooch variant and a radiate-headed Frankish type [50]. Last with foot missing, all fine to very fine, including a few fragments

Roman, a varied collection of plate-bronze brooches, including enamelled discs with roundel, star and triskele- patterns; gilt discs (2), both inset with glass, another with spoke pattern; disc with beaded border inset with Roman coin design; open-work plate brooches, including cross- and crescent-shaped, equal armed and umbonate; together with an Anglo-Saxon button-brooch, gilded and chip-carved [32]. Mostly fine, a few better

Roman, a varied collection of zoomorphic bronze brooches comprising fish (2), horse and rider, horses of Iberian style (2), chicken, duck, peacock, eagle and hare, bird in flight, rabbits (3), boar, bull, dolphin and a fly; together with equal-armed plate brooches with a dolphin riveted in the centre (2), an animal-headed plate brooch and skeumorphic brooches (2) both of a sandal [22]. Fine to very fine

Roman and later, a group of objects (8), including a Roman-British bronze bust of Mithras wearing a Phrygian cap, an Anglo-Saxon bronze pin with ring-and-dot decoration, a 13th century lead lozenge-shaped seal reading S’ALINDAL, a lead triangular weight with three lions, 15th century lead pilgrim’s ampullæ (2) etc. [8]. Anglo-Saxon, a gilt-bronze finger ring, the shoulders decorated with oval panels at the corners, inset with green glass, the circular raised bezel inset with blue and red cloisonné enamel; an 11th century circular pewter pendant decorated with a cast design of pellets and lines [2]. Both fine, first with a hairline crack to hoop, second with integral suspension loop

Anglo-Saxon, bronze strap-ends (3), with zoomorphic terminals with niello inlay (2), with ring and dot punches [3]. First two very good, last very fine with attractive green patina

Medieval, a late 13th century bronze seal matrix with centrally mounted loop; the circular face with a design of a stag’s head, cross between antlers, star and crescent at sides of face, reads S’ HAMONIS D’FROINGHAM, 22mm high, 21mm diameter, 12g. Good very fine with olive green patina


£200-300 Provenance: Found near Halifax, West Yorkshire.


Possibly relating either to the village of Frodingham, North Lincolnshire which has a 12th century church dedicated to St Lawrence or North Frodingham, East Yorkshire, which is mentioned in the Doomsday Book. Both are about 50 miles from the find-spot

Medieval, an early 14th century bronze seal matrix with top-mounted loop; the circular face with a design of an axe, reads S’ WILLI : MAN, 7mm high, 22mm diameter, 6.5g. Fine with green patina

Medieval, a 14th century bronze key with lozenge-shaped bow; together with a 6th century bronze chip-carved mount, a 10th century Anglo-Saxon bronze openwork strap-end and a 14th century gilt brass buckle strap decorated with a bird [4]. Mostly fine
