HOW SWEET THE SOUND

The words to this overwhelmingly popular and long-standing folk hymn were written by John Newton, a notoriously profane and obscene man who experienced a series of spiritual conversions during and after his work as a sailor in the Atlantic slave trade. During a particularly dangerous storm at sea, Newton resorted to tying himself to a part of the ship to keep from being thrown overboard. In the intensity of the moment, he cried "Lord have mercy upon us," a plea that stuck with him after surviving the storm.

Newton’s tendency to risk death, turn back to God, and relapse to old ways, made him a man who knew well the struggle of sin and the essentiality of God's grace. While his faith journey was as rocky as the seas he sailed, the theme of his words is one that tends to resonate with much of humanity, making the hymn one of the most recognizable songs in the English-speaking world.
