After weeks of seemingly endless negotiations and horse trading, we finally have a new government in Leinster House.


With Fine Gael Taoiseach Enda Kenny re-elected, the dental community in Ireland could be forgiven for giving in to an unfamiliar bout of optimism. If this sensation fills you with unease, then I’ll explain quickly before you have to reach for the valium... Fine Gael, for all their faults, were the only party to


mention dentistry at all in their pre-election manifesto. Not only did they mention dentistry, but they promised to restore the Dental Treatment Benefit scheme as part of its PRSI reforms and to introduce preventive dentistry for medical care holders...


Now, the cynics out there will no doubt argue that manifesto promises don’t always come to pass, but it’s a start. It’s a recognition of the problem and that

something needs to be done. Add this to the imminent new Dentist Act (how imminent, we are still waiting to find out) and the landscape for dentistry might be very different in a few months’ time. Whether that landscape turns out to be a positive new direction remains to be seen, but, like I say, it’s a start...
