Traders move in to new units
NEW businesses are moving into Park Wood with the regeneration ofWallisAvenue. The Mayor of Maidstone Cllr
Daniel Moriarty officially opened Phases 1 and 2 of the Golding Homes’ scheme, which has pro- vided 146 homes and 13 retail units. He is pictured with Roger Ford of Golding Homes. The retail units replace the shops
in the existing Parkwood Parade, which will be demolished to make way for a further 56 houses and flats and two more shops. Both national and local independ-
ent retailers have signed up to the new units, including The Beauty Closet, Heart of Kent Hospice, Greggs Bakery and McColls con- venience store. Two of the units will be occupied
by Fusion as a local community cafe and training centre. Anne Chapman, Golding Homes’
head of new business and commer- cial services, said:“We are delighted that retailers share our vision for this area. The construction stage is coming to an end and several retail-
ers are already trading.” The remaining units should be occupied by the end of April. Mark Mickelburgh, head of retail
for Heart of Kent Hospice, said:“We are delighted with the new shop, which is both modern and spacious and offers us a great opportunity to stock a greater range of furniture as well as our usual range of donated items. We are already open and trading and look forward to wel- coming new and existing customers to our store.” TheWallisAvenue scheme has al-
ready been recognised for its dis- tinctive, high quality design. The new homes include a mix of
family houses and flats and replace a similar number of outdated small flats.
News Charity’s plea for support
A FUN day is being held to help get a fledgling children’s charity in Maidstone off the ground. The Alfie Rose Foundation was set up by Alfie’s mum Ellen Ridley,
after her son was born with a life-threatening kidney disease. She now wants to get charitable status as ameans of gaining greater
access to grants – but the group needs to raise at least £5,000 a year to qualify. Alfie suffers from nephrotic
syndrome, which means his body does not process proteins. Large amounts of protein leak
into his body via holes in the kidneys and, although steroids seal the holes these can cause a huge amount of other issues, such as ADHD and anxiety, both of which now affect the three- year old. He is also more at risk of
catching colds and infections and has to live on a very basic diet, with no processed foods and very little salt, and have his urine tested twice a day. Miss Ridley set up a Facebook
page, which now has nearly 700 followers throughout the world, to highlight the problems caused by the syndrome and to act as a counselling service for fellow sufferers and their families. She has been busy organising a fundraising event atMadginford Hall,
Bearsted, from 2pm to 5pm on Saturday, April 2. Entry is free and there will be a jumble sale, raffle, face-painting, tombola, cakes and refreshments and much more. She said: “We are locally based and would be grateful for any support.
Since the foundation was established in 2013, we have become friends with nephrotic children and adults all over the world.”
