As part of Virginia Department

of Education’s E-Learning Backpack Initiative High school students at Churchland, I.C. Norcom, and Woodrow Wilson received a technology boost recently – a Chromebook. The new technology offers students chance

to engage in the classroom

through Google Apps and for extended learning at home.

The boost in digital technology is

supported by the Virginia E-Backpack Learning Initiative which provided $553,200 in grant funds to the division. In addition to the grant, the school board

dedicated an additional $2.5

million to support this new program. “We are offering these

Chromebooks to students, just like we do textbooks: free,” said Claude Parent, chairman of the school board. “It is important that our students have the opportunity to engage in learning anytime, anywhere – this technology promotes that.”

Students will use these devices to a

communicate, collaborate, and create meaningful learning experiences that support the curriculum. The program provides students, teachers, and staff with platforms such as Google Apps for Education and Office 365 to facilitate learning beyond the walls of the classroom. These devices and applications serve as catalysts to equip students with college and career readiness skills to be successful in the academic and workplace setting.

In addition to the Chromebooks,

the network infrastructure at all high schools and middle schools received a $1.7 million upgrade. The increased wireless footprint will allow teachers and students to have a seamless online experience. The program is designed to always keep students up and running with student help desks in each school to service and replace devices on site.

Students will continue to receive

the new, take-home technology throughout the month.
