Volunteering a barking success for Dylan

Rubys Mount Gambier has been involved in a commu- nity engagement project that has seen clients and staff take on volunteering roles with local organisations.

Dylan was one young person to take part in the program, spending time helping out each week at the South East Animal Welfare League (SEAWL). He shares his experiences here.

‘I enjoyed volunteering at SEAWL because I like animals. It was a worthwhile experience because I learned so much about how to care for animals. I loved how friendly they were with me. While I was there, it also took my mind away from any worries.

At first I assumed that the dogs would be aggressive but they’re not. One of them would put its paws on my legs and want to be patted all the time. After the first visit, I’d picked out a dog that I wanted to adopt, though I couldn’t convince Mum.

After a few visits one of the staff asked me if I’d be interested in the Vet course about how to care for animals. It was free and I thought it’d be good. I’m looking forward to doing that soon.

I participated for more than 16 weeks and got a certificate of achievement. This expe- rience can go on my resume too. If I hadn’t been a part of Rubys, I probably wouldn’t have thought about doing volunteer work.’

Mel, Operations Coordinator at SEAWL, said Dylan has a great talent with dogs and should be encour- aged to gain more training to work with animals.

‘We miss Dylan and his help,’ she says. ‘It’s been great to have the support of Rubys staff and young people at SEAWL.’

Rubys Coordinator, Tasja Barelds says the program has been a great success.

‘Dylan’s story is a great testament to young people committing to volunteer work, and to the wellbeing and other benefits it brings,’ she says. ‘Thanks to staff at SEAWL for welcoming us and encouraging young people to get involved, and stimulate their career paths in animal care.’
