CLEANER WATER

YOUR OWN ‘CLEAR WATER’ CHECKLIST • pH, total alkalinity and calcium hardness are all interlinked and affect each other, so it will take trial and error to get all three in the proper range at once. Before you add any chemical – especially an acid – to the water, remember you first need to turn on the pool’s filter

• Always be careful to follow the instructions when you use chemicals

• Wear goggles and rubber gloves when handling chlorine, and always put the chlorine into the water – don’t pour the water over the chlorine

• Add chlorine three to four times a week for a pool in heavy use

• Occasionally – no more than once a week – you may need to superchlorinate (also called shock) the pool to burn any built-up bacteria, algae and ammonia

• Keep the swimming pool floor clean by regularly sweeping with a pool vac or cleaner

• Clean your pool filter thoroughly at least monthly. Clean a sand filter by backwashing: Reverse the flow of water through the filter for at least 2 to 3 minutes until the wastewater is clear

• For a cartridge filter, remove the filter cartridge and wash it with a hose with a high-pressure nozzle. Allow to dry and the replace the cartridge.

SWIMFRESH OFFERS BUDGET RANGE FOR POOLS The Swimfresh range aimed at the more budget conscious pool and spa owner. Its no-nonsense comprehensive approach offers all the necessary chemical products required to

keep swimming pool water sanitised and safe throughout the summer. The high quality products are very competitively priced and should be available from your local swimming pool store. • Tel: 01993 778855 • www.certikin.co.uk

• Buy the chlorine product best-suited for your pool. There are many types of chlorine products. Liquid chlorine is used for large pools and is difficult to use for the average pool owner. There are tablets that contain chlorine and a chlorine stabiliser or conditioner. You can also purchase granular chlorine that dissolves quickly. It is best, however, to talk to a pool specialist about your pool, its size, and filter and pump system.

• Use the correct amount. After you purchase your chlorine, you will need to put the chlorine

in the correct location in the pool carefully, either in the floaters, skimmers or in-line erosion feeders. Follow the manufacturer’s directions and wear gloves and goggles as a precautionary measure.

• You may need to add a chlorine stabiliser or conditioner to your pool. Discuss this with your pool specialist, but depending on the chlorine you use, you may only need to do this once per season or once every few weeks.

• Test your chlorine levels a couple of hours
