CHANGES IN NAVIGATIONAL REQUIREMENTS


Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) are becoming a much sought after addition to the navigation station of many commercial vessels due to local and national regulation changes. The system is designed to improve navigation safety by observing other AIS equipped ships and reporting position, heading, speed and other information to a bridge display while also transmitting the same information on own vessel to other AIS equipped vessels in the area. This automatic exchange of information has obvious safety and collision avoidance benefits which maritime authorities are keen to encourage.


MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS


In the USA AIS will be mandatory for all vessels of a certain size operating in US waters from early next year, in Europe requirements have been in place for larger vessels for many years.


On a localised basis Ships Electronics Services has seen a noticeable spike in demand for AIS units in recent months due to the “Forth Crossing” project instigated by Forth & Tay Navigation Service which requires that any vessel, small or large, working on the project must have as a minimum Class B AIS.


SPECIFICATIONS Colin Anderson, Director of SES explained, “AIS has two basic versions the Class A for larger vessels and Class B for smaller commercial and leisure craft. We are suppling the Furuno FA150 and the Jotron TR8000 as Class A units for the larger vessels, these have a stand-alone display screen.


“For the Class B requirement on smaller


craft which is a black box transponder interfacing to a chartplotter we have been mainly installing Furuno’s FA50 which is very compact and can be integrated with most navigation stations. The Forth regulations have certainly increased our work in this area.


“As a supplier for most of the larger electronics manufacturers we are an early port of call for shipyards and operators when navigation regulations come into force so we have seen the effect of the Forth Crossing. It will certainly assist in improving safety while providing valuable input to the authority’s vessel database which records all ship voyages in the estuaries.”
