Pre-school told to improve teaching Poems inspire
A GOVERNMENT inspector has advised a Maidstone pre-school that it must improve the quality of its teaching. The inspector rated Little Mon-
sters Pre-School at the Howard de Walden Centre in Bluett Street as requiring improvement after a pre- vious “good” rating. Inspector Elizabeth Mackey re- ported: “The quality of teaching is not consistently good. At times, staff do not make the most of op- portunities to extend conversations with children to encourage their
communication and language skills, particularly during story time.” She suggested efforts should be made to ensure all childrenwere involved and given time to re- spond to questions. The inspector noted that staff
had a clear understanding of their responsibilities to safeguard chil- dren, were familiar with the set- ting's policy and knew the procedures to follow should they have any concerns about a child’s welfare. Ms Mackey agreed young- sters behaved well and showed
care and concern for each other, but advised the pre-school to improve the arrangements for assessing children’s learning by asking par- ents about what children knew and could do, before joining. Trudy Glenister, who owns the pre-school, said: “We were sad- dened and disappointed with the outcome. However, since the in- spection we have been working closely with the improvements team at KCC and are confident we will return to ‘good’ within 12 months.”
A MAIDSTONE pensioner is to launch her first book at 86. Muriel Garcia, from Sandling, worked from the age of 16 to her late 70s in a variety of jobs: in the Women’s Royal Naval Service, as a PE teacher, a lab technician, a li- brarian and a church verger. The book, “A man of many parts
and other verses”, is a compilation of poems inspired by both people and places she has known. Her book is being published by
Austin McCauley and will be launched at Maidstone Library at 2pm on Saturday, November 28.
