Fake doctor treated 91 patients, court told

A TOVIL woman who admitted stealing a doctor’s identity and treating almost 100 patients throughout England before being discovered has been jailed. Oluwadamilola Opemuyi (29), of Bridgeside Mews, Tovil, used the doctor’s details alongside a number of false documents to find employ- ment through a locum agency. In January this year, she treated patients at three separate locations in Essex and Liverpool, aswell as at two prisons on the Isle of Sheppey. Opemuyi’s crimes came to light

when she was arrested at a phar- macy in Maidstone on January 26 after attempting to collect two pre- scriptions she had written for her- self.

She was sentenced to two years www.downsmail.co.uk asked the General Medical Council

and four months imprisonment at Maidstone Crown Court, having pleaded guilty to four counts of fraud by false representation, three counts of forgery and two counts of possessing a false identity docu- ment with intent. The court heard how Opemuyi

Opemuyi eventually gained em- ployment through a locum agency, which sent her to work with pa- tients at the Swaleside and Elmley prisons on the Isle of Sheppey for a one-week trial period. However, shewas not kept on following com- plaints about her work. The agency then sent Opemuyi to

work at a surgery in Essex and two separate locations in Liverpool, but was released without pay shortly afterwards following further com- plaints.

Oluwadamilola Opemuyi

about becoming a GP in December 2014 but was told it would not be possible without a primarymedical qualification, which normally in- volves studying medicine for five years.

Despite lacking any such experi-

ence, she applied for a number of vacancies using theGMCreference number of a legitimate doctor. She also forged a marriage certificate, a GMC certificate and various other medical documents, and used a false driving licence and passport.

Inspector Ivan Beasley of the

Kent and Essex Serious Crime Di- rectorate said: “Thesewere very se- rious offences committed by a woman who went to great lengths to gain employment as a doctor, despite not having the necessary qualifications to do so. “She treated 91 patients, all of

whom have since been contacted by the NHS. They will no doubt have been alarmed and concerned to hear of Opemuyi’s actions, as was the legitimate doctor whose identity she stole in order to com- mit her crimes.”
