Coping with climate change


Strategies and action priorities being devised tomeet the challenges faced by Fraser Valley farmers.


H


otter and drier summers, increased flood risks and more extreme weather events are just some of the changes in climate expected to affect agriculture in the Fraser Valley. A new adaptation plan outlines the priority impact areas and a series of strategies to increase the resilience of the valley’s agriculture sector in a changing climate.


The BC Agriculture and Food Climate Action Initiative (CAI) brought agricultural producers together with the Fraser Valley Regional District, local governments and provincial agencies to identify solutions and priority actions to

adapt to the challenges facing the sector.


Implementation of priority actions will be supported by a $300,000 investment from the federal and provincial governments through Growing Forward 2. “The development and


implementation of strategies is key to improving the resilience of one of Canada’s most productive growing


regions,” says federal agriculture minister Gerry Ritz.


“This will uphold our commitment to supplying safe and quality products to local and international markets, while sustaining growth and competitiveness.”
