Italy (12.2 %) and France (12.0 %) were the only other EU member states to record double-digit shares, followed by Spain (9.1 %) and Sweden (8.7 %).


Among renewable energies, the most important source in Europe was biomass and renewable waste, accounting for 64.2 percent of primary renewables production in 2013.


Hydropower was the other main contributor to the renewable energy mix (16.6 % of the total). Although levels of production remained relatively low, there was a rapid expansion in the output of wind and solar energy, which accounted for 10.5 percent and 5.5 percent respectively of the EU-28’s renewable energy produced in 2013.


The remaining shares were 3.1 percent for geothermal energy and 0.02 percent for tide, wave, and ocean energy, the latter being found in only France and the United Kingdom.

In the United States, the Aloha State of Hawaii has announced a bold energy agenda — to achieve 100 percent clean energy by the year 2045.


Along with reducing the islands’ dependency on fossil fuels and increasing efficiency, the Hawaii State Energy Office has embarked on a plan to position Hawaii as a proving ground for clean energy technologies and accelerate the state’s transformation to a clean energy economy.


According to Hawaii News Now, Hawaii residents typically pay between two and three times the national average for electricity, but officials believe the addition of new renewable energy resources will help stimulate price decreases, reducing the state's reliance on the more than $4 billion spent annually

The majority of the renewable energy in those six states comes from hydropower, which the report points out is “well-exploited and very geographically specific.”


Currently Idaho, Washington, and Oregon are generating more than 70 percent of their electricity from renewable energy. The states with the lowest percent of their electricity generation coming from renewable energy are Ohio, Delaware, and Rhode Island, the report said.


Maryland is leading the way toward sustainable investment by including environmental and social factors to evaluate major capital decisions, including fleet vehicles, weatherization and land conservation investments.


Last October, EU leaders agreed on the domestic 2030 greenhouse gas reduction target of at least 40 percent.
