Bishop Dagwell Hall Endures in History and Importance

ifty years ago marked a historic time for the school in a number of ways. Te St. Helen’s Hall Class of 1965 was the first group of students to graduate from the Nicol Road campus. St. Helen’s Hall was also busily preparing for a new companion school that would open in the fall, Bishop Dagwell Hall. Boys had always been a part

of St. Helen’s Hall, but were only admitted to Lower School. Tis new vision expanded boys’ education on campus, and for the first time, male students in grades seven through 12 would also benefit from the mission, history, and traditions of “Te Hall.” Bishop Dagwell Hall was named after

Benjamin Dunlap Dagwell who was the fifth Bishop of Oregon, a key benefactor of the school, and a man who was renowned for his intelligence and life of service. From the beginning, Bishop Dagwell Hall and its relation to its sister school, St. Helen’s Hall, called for coordinated rather than co-educational education. It was intended that two Middle and Upper Schools would live side-by-side on

the campus. In 1968 the two schools took on an umbrella name of “Oregon Episcopal Schools, St. Helen’s Hall, and Bishop Dagwell Hall.” In 1970 it was decided the two would benefit more by becoming co-educational. Tey were still operated as separate schools until 1973 when diplomas began bearing the OES moniker that we know today. Te 1970s era mandate of co-education for male and female students forever changed the school, but Bishop Dagwell Hall endures in small and big ways throughout OES: Along with the sustained impact and support of our Bishop Dagwell Hall alumni on the school, the main building structure is still used as an academic building, the same boys’ dorms continue to support our school operations teams, and each year a senior boy who has evidenced qualities befitting Bishop

Dagwell is honored with the Bishop Dagwell Hall award. Tough the campus, curricula, and culture of a school will change over time to meet the needs of the present and safeguard the legacy of our future, it is important our past endures and continues to make an impact. To the students, faculty, staff, and parents of Bishop Dagwell Hall, we thank you for this important chapter in our history.
