Anti-bullying: When Adults Are Held Accountable, Children Learn

concern for students as well as adults. There have been instances where adults bully children online while pretending to be a child themselves. This behavior is reprehensible.

Some instances where we have seen adults bullying children and even bullying

coaching situations. Many children and even parents

other adults are in are so obsessed

with professional athletics that they are willing to overlook the fact that a coach is simply a bully. These coaches should be reprimanded at the first sight of overly aggressive behavior. There is a significant difference

between preparing a

student to become the best athlete that they can be and bullying that student.

BY ANGELA JONES

We have heard in the media over the last several years about children taking bullying to extremes. While all bullying is wrong, I believe situations can be exacerbated when children see adults being bullies. Whether it is a domestic violence situation that a child witnesses at home or a teacher bullying a student at school, if adults are not held accountable, children may mimic that bad behavior.

Nearly 1 in 3 students or 27.8% report being bullied during the school year according to a 2013 National Center

for Educational Statistics

report. Also, students who experience bullying are at an increased risk for depression, anxiety, sleep difficulties, and poor school adjustment based on data collected by the Center for Disease Control in 2012. Obviously, bullying has become an epidemic.

We know from news reports, and perhaps from personal experience, that cyberbullying is another cause for

I believe the violent tendencies by professional athletes

bullying they may have

experienced from coaches over the years. If an advocate had stepped forward on their behalf, it could have brought an end to the bullying they were experiencing

and prevented

them from perpetuating the same unacceptable behavior in the future. A 2001 study showed that 57% of bullying situations stop when a peer intervenes on behalf of the student being bullied.

It is imperative anti-bullying

that we programs

in our homes and in our schools. There should be zero tolerance for bullying everywhere. According to a 2013 study by McCallion and Feder, school-based bullying prevention programs decrease bullying by up to 25%. This is a problem that adults can lead by example to solve. If adults stop being disrespectful to each other, the youth will follow suit. Bullying is definitely a learned behavior.

of the vehicle if they don’t expect to make money on the financing.

Don’t hesitate to seek different

financing offers. You may be surprised by how comparison shopping for an auto loan can save you money. While submitting multiple loan applications generally

can slightly lower your

credit score, those for car loans made within a short period (such as 14 days, according to some credit scoring models) generally are grouped together to minimize the effect.

Compare loan offers based on

the Annual Percentage Rate because the APR includes certain fees as well as the interest rate. “The size of your monthly payment is important, but resist attempts to focus your attention on the monthly payment instead of the APR,” said Luke W. Reynolds, Chief of the FDIC’s Outreach and Program Development Section. “Remember, the APR reflects the true cost of the loan.”

The longer your loan, the more you pay in interest. “Long-term loans may lower your monthly payment but you will pay more in interest over the life of the loan,” Reynolds added.

“You may even be offered a loan that is longer than you expect to keep the car.”

Keep good records of your loan

quotes. Before signing on the dotted line, review the loan agreement (the contract) and make sure any potential fees, the interest rate, and other key terms match what you were initially told.

Don’t allow anyone to steer

you toward a larger purchase and a bigger loan than you will be able to comfortably pay. In addition to your monthly loan payment, you need to budget for the cost of auto insurance, licensing fees and taxes.

Leave the car at the dealership

until your loan terms are finalized. If a dealer offers you a “contingent” or “conditional” loan agreement and lets you drive the car home, the loan terms may change and be less advantageous for you when you return to finalize the purchase.

If you have a problem with your lender or its debt collection practices that you can’t fix on your own, help is available. Consider filing a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau at help.consumerfi- nance.gov/app/vehicleconsumerloan/ ask.
