Impressive concert line-ups New Season

IT’S that exciting time of year again when concert venues across the world announce the sensational array of or- chestral shows that make up their new season. But none are as impressive

as St David’s Hall’s 2015/16 International Concert Series. Thisautumnmarks the start

of a city-wide celebration of the iconic Rachmaninov. Few composers have attracted the sheer love and devotion that he commands worldwide. But there’s also a wonderful-

ly widespread range of music on offer elsewhere too in our fantastic new programme. Starting the new season in

style is the Dresden Philhar- monic on October 7. Steeped in German classics, they bring romantic warmth to Rachmaninov’s Piano Con- certo No 1 – expertly played by compelling Russian solo- ist Andrei Korobeinikov. The Fourth Symphony is Brahms at his most passionate and poetic, while few can match the grandeur of Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. Armonico Consort, on Oc- tober 20, return with a pair of Baroque masterpieces in- cluding Purcell’s great opera to hopeless love Dido and Ae- neas. Plus, the performance comes to a moving conclusion with Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater. Vladimir Ashkenazy’s con-

certs are always one of the great events of St David’s Hall’s season. Ashkenazy combines forces with young pianist Ingolf Wunder and the Philharmonia Orchestra on November 4, for a perfect programme of Berlioz, Cho- pin and Rachmaninov. Continuing the Spotlight

on Rachmaninov theme, the Welsh National Opera Or-

chestra on November 12, pays their homage to the legendary Russian composer. Impecca- bly conducted and performed by Xian Zhang and pianist Peter Donohue, this special night takes in both the splen- dour of Rachmaninov’s Third Piano Concerto, and Tchaiko- vsky’s Fourth Symphony. The next month sees the

Royal Northern Sinfonia on December 2, deliver a power- ful collection of classics from Mozart, Barber and Prokof- iev. Not since John Williams back in the 1960s has a gui- tarist captured the imagina- tion of the public like Miloš Karadagli , who showcases his skills with an awe-inspir- ing solo recital on his first visit to the Hall. Plus, the following week The Sixteen on December 11, re- turn for their annual Christ- mas concert – unquestionably one of the most anticipated events in the festive calendar. And early in the New Year, the Welsh National Opera Orchestra on January 10, are back with conductor Lothar

CLASS: The Sixteen

Koenigs and soprano Rebecca Evans sharing the stage for a celebration of Strauss’ life as well as Mahler’s heavenly Fourth Symphony. Following his amazing Ger- shwin in Hollywood concert at St David’s Hall, the hugely successful John Wilson re- turns alongside Philharmo- nia Orchestra on February 7, for great English classics by Vaughan Williams and Finzi. Furthermore, Edward Wick-

ham and The Clerks examine The Secret Life of JS Bach on March 13, which not only breathes new life into his sublime music, but also his intriguing personality. Equally experimental and

innovative in their approach are the Welsh National Op- era Orchestra on May 1, who present THREE, which con- sists of a trio of exciting new works. Funded by the Arts Council of Wales, a talented selection of Cardiff’s finest young composers are led by Gareth Glyn, Pwyll ap Siôn and Jörg Widmann for an ex- hibition of three art forms –

poetry, visual art and music. And from Russia with love comes the Moscow State Sym- phony Orchestra on May 17, for a night of Prokofiev and Shostakovich under the leg- endary leadership of conduc- tor Pavel Kogan. Last but by no means least,

we welcome the BBC National Orchestra of Wales onMay 20, in association with the Vale of Glamorgan Festival. Bask in their hauntingly atmos- pheric interpretation of Steve Reich’s The Desert Music, as well as the world premiere of P teris Vasks’ Concerto for Viola&Orchestra. LEGEND: Richard Thompson

LEGENDARY British song- writer Richard Thompson OBE is coming to St David’s Hall on Tuesday, September 15. Thompson is renowned as be-

ing one of the greatest rock gui- tarists of all time. Having co-founded the

groundbreaking group Fair- port Convention as a teenager in the 60s, Thompson and his bandmates virtually invented British folk rock. A string of critically acclaimed albums followed including the classic Liege & Lief. Yet, by the age of 21, he made the bold move of leaving to pursue a solo career. Since then he’s deservedly

won Lifetime Achievement Awards for Songwriting on both sides of the Atlantic and inspired a huge array of artists such as Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant, REM, Elvis Costello and David Byrne of Talking Heads. Thompson’s massive body of work includes over 40 albums,

many Grammy nominations, Ivor Novellos and a suc- cessful decade-long musical partnership with his ex-wife Linda. In 2013, he performed at the Americanarama Tour where he shared the stage with Bob Dylan, who covered Thompson’s classic song 1952 Vincent Black Lightning. His 2015 tour is in support

of his new sixteenth album entitled Still, which was pro- duced byWilco’s Jeff Tweedy and will be released in June. Thompson’s genre-defying mastery of both the acoustic and electric guitar is mes- merising. Experience this star of the six-string live at St David’s Hall.
