a circulating water system. Either of these systems will keep hoses off the aisle and will save lots of time and labor while ensuring the horses have clean, fresh water.
And, if you’re considering a composting system for
manure disposal, mattresses will help keep the bedding load smaller, which creates the opportunity for a smaller, less expensive composting facility that will still function well. The second recommendation is for rubber brick pavers
in the wash/groom stalls. They are non-slip, even when wet, whereas the rubber mats are not. If you can’t afford rubber bricks throughout the barn (or if you don’t want them because they are harder to sweep), at least use them in the wash/groom and vetting areas. My third recommendation would be for automatic water- ers with consumption gauges if the budget will allow, or for
Holly: Insure optimal ventilation and light in your barn. Install Dutch doors in every stall instead of just windows. Have the local fire department come and discuss your safety protocol and response efforts. It will make you see that you should have the latest VESDA (very early smoke detection apparatus) system that will give all an early heads- up and can add testing daily air quality as well. That would be worth splurging on. And you’d save on insurance, so it is a smart investment.
Can you discuss the benefits of a composting system? Georgia: Like stall mattresses, a composting system requires an initial investment but the savings in cartage fees for the manure dumpsters can begin to pay dividends fairly quickly. Also, compost is wonderful for paddocks and pastures, so you will be keeping your grass healthier and the turn-outs in better condition with a natural product. Aerated composting systems do not require the time and
labor previously needed to turn the piles. They will deliver a completed ready-to-use product much more quickly.
