MMA Receives MEIF-SCI Grant to Complete Research and Development of Fuel-Effi cient Lobster Boat Hull Design CASTINE—Maine Maritime Academy (MMA) has received a grant of $75,312 from the Maine Economic Improvement Fund Small Campus Initiative (MEIF-SCI) to complete research and development of a lobster boat hull that increases fuel effi - ciency. Now in its fourth year of design and scale-model trials, the multi-year collabora- tion between MMA and the Penobscot East Resource Center (PERC) will be focused on completing the R&D phase of a trima- ran design that signifi cantly reduces fuel use and pollution, while maintaining the large deck capacity needed for commercial lobster fi shing.
“Our research began with interviewing
lobster fi shermen to understand their re- quirements,” said Douglas Read, Associate Professor of Engineering at Maine Maritime Academy. “We then designed and tested var- ious scale-model solutions, and our students collected and evaluated that data. Now, we are proving hydrodynamic benefi ts of our ultimate concept, a trimaran design. We’re optimizing the design, and testing it under varying conditions in larger-scale versions.” The MEIF-SCI grant will position
MMA and PERC to complete the design and engineering work necessary to be able to engage with multiple builders. The project goals for the research grant include: the use of free running models to complete sea- keeping and maneuvering analysis; refi ning stability analysis of the design; confi rming fi nal hydrodynamic performance; and con- ducting detailed strength analysis. Ultimate- ly, a full-scale prototype of an optimized trimaran design will be built and tested. “The result of this project will be an in- novative hull design that reduces emissions, which could have signifi cant long-term impacts on the sustainability of the Maine lobster fi shing fl eet,” said Robin Alden, Executive Director of the Penobscot East Resource Center. A sustainable future for fi sheries and fi shing communities in East- ern Maine and beyond is part of the PERC mission.
Founded in 2003, Penobscot East Re- source Center is a non-profi t organization that works to secure a diversifi ed fi shing future for the communities of Eastern Maine and beyond. The organization develops and implements innovative programs that pro- vide value for today’s fi shermen and drive more sustainable management approaches for future fi sheries. An essential component of their work is connecting the knowledge of fi shermen, the fi ndings of scientists, and the world of policy makers. For more infor- mation, visit

Funded through an annual State ap- propriation and periodically augmented through voter-approved bond referenda, the Maine Economic Improvement Fund (MEIF) provides university-based research- ers with the capital necessary to leverage federal and private sector research grants and contracts. Those grants and contracts, in turn, create and sustain economic devel- opment through new jobs, products, tech- nologies, companies, and opportunities. For information, visit

MMA Community Celebrates Student Civic Engagement at Annual Student Life Awards Banquet Students at Maine Maritime Academy (MMA) are encouraged to complete com- munity service hours as part of their edu- cation. The Academy’s annual Student Life Awards Banquet, held on Wednesday, April 8, recognized students who have contributed
time, knowledge and skills to help better the college and surrounding community. The Student Life Participation and
Leadership Awards Committee, made up of MMA staff and faculty, recognized com- munity members with awards for student community service, and with the Sarah F. Hudson Unsung Mariner Award, the Mar- iner Pride Award, and the Phyllis Tenney Community Service and Leadership Award. Level-one awards acknowledge pos- itive community contribution. The recog- nized students in this category have made positive contributions to the MMA and/ or Castine communities through personal involvement in extra-curricular activities, employment positions, volunteer programs, community service projects, or leadership positions, typically over one year or less. The following students were recog- nized as level-one award recipients: Arik Akerberg,
Sarah Anderson-McLean,
Madeline Armstrong, Elizabeth Bailey, Michael Bataran, Anthony Boucher, Isaac Doiron, Erin Donlon, Ryan Donlon, Kate Doughty, Dylan Drinkwater, Robert Euiler, Kyle Fallon, Caroline Foy, Taylor Grace, Cody Gray, Myron Hahn, Jared Hall, David Harrison, Katelyn Hart, Zachary Hartley, Cory Jernigan, Adam Kravetz, Cassandra Lopez, Jacques Lussier, Edison Ma, Cody MacCabe, Alexandria Martin, Caroline Martin, Micah McBrine, Cory McCoy, Andrew McGonagle, Sarah Meyer, Ty- ler
and helping to strengthen the campus com- munity.
This year’s Mariner Pride Award was presented to Kurt Borkman, who accepted the award on behalf of the MMA Boxing Match team of organizers. This year’s Box- ing Match brought several hundred students together, and was one of the most talk- ed-about and most desired student-driven events ever held. The efforts that went into the planning, preparation, and participation for the event were truly impressive, and the team executed a one-of-a-kind experience. The Sarah F. Hudson Unsung Mariner is a student-nominated award that is given to a faculty or staff member for demonstrating outstanding community service and support of student life. This year’s Unsung Mariner award recipient was Public Services Librarian, Lauren Blanchard. Dr. Elizabeth True, Vice President for Enrollment Management, pre- sented the award and offered these remarks, “Lauren has been an integral part of a strong team to make big changes possible in the Library.
Service and Leadership Award recipient was Jillian Perron. Ms. Perron has worked diligently to serve Maine Maritime Acade- my, and its surrounding community since her arrival four years ago. She has done so through hard work, leadership, strong character, and humility.
Jillian fi lls nearly
every free moment of her day volunteering her time within the community, excelling academically, competing on the hard wood, and working on campus.
She carries an impressive 3.63 GPA in Marine Biology and has been a member of the women’s basketball team for four years, where she has been selected as the team’s captain twice. She is not only a leader among her peers, but also a successful student-ath- lete, having received North Atlantic Con- ference All-Academic Honors and Mariner Classic All-Tournament accolades. She is a member of the Student Mariner
Nemsdale, Luke Olson, R. Dylan Pearce, Liam Pitchford, Hollister Poole, John Pooler, Andrew Rogers, Jake Sigouin, Mitch Stewart, Gabrielle Wells, Thomas White, and Caroline Yates.
Level-two awards represent out- standing community impact by Academy students.
