Leadership Workshop for Teenage Girls

L

aura Adrian, a kundalini yoga teacher and craniosacral therapist

practicing in the Twin Cities area, will host a four-week program for teenage girls entitled Root to Rise: Embodied Leadership Intensive. The course meets 6 to 9 p.m., Mondays, at Lake Harriet Spiritual Communi- ty, from June 29 to July 20. Adrian develops classes to

assist students in shedding their lim- iting beliefs, unveiling their innate strengths and bringing clarity into their lives. “My goal as a teacher is to give students tools to overcome obstacles and live their potential.” The focus of Root to Rise is to

empower young women to uncover their authentic leadership abilities. They will be taught how to develop strengths, refine communication skills, overcome obstacles and set goals. Students who complete the program take a quantum leap for- ward in personal growth, integrity, confidence and communication. The program weaves together

kundalini yoga with engaging indi- vidual and group activities to help young women become the best ver- sions of themselves. Kundalini yoga is a powerful and practical tool to cultivate clarity, harmony, wellness and emotional balance.

Cost: $120. ($95 Early Bird Rate until June 1.) Location: 4401 Upton Ave., Minneapolis. Pre-registration required. Register at LauraEvelyn Adrian.com. See Community Resource Guide listing, page 38.

n her documentary, Midwife, Minneapolis filmmaker Allison Kuznia follows Sarah Biermeier (Geneabirth), of Minnesota, during her first year in practice as a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM). The documenta- ry quietly shows the life of a home birth midwife, from prenatals to births, to postpartums, while also examining what the birth environment looks like in states where home birth midwifery is illegal, and families are left with fewer birth options.

“I started out as a birth photographer,” Kuznia states, “and felt called to make this movie. With their quiet knowledge and expertise, and desire to support mothers wholeheartedly, there’s something beautiful about a home birth midwife holding the space for the birthing woman; I wanted to show the world what that looks like.” Twenty-two states do not allow CPMs to attend home births. If a midwife

Sarah Biermeier

chooses to practice there anyway, she is faced with the possibility of arrest. In an act that should be simple, giving birth has become a human rights issue and a political event. Midwife shows the compassion and beauty that begin with birth, and

encourages viewers to explore their options as to whom they choose to be in attendance at their births.

The documentary premiered in the Twin Cities in late 2013, and is now avail- able to stream or purchase online at MidwifeTheDocumentary.com.
