features stunning special effects and a brilliant cast of actor musicians. “Its fun, lively and it’ll

make you laugh” Mark Newnham, who plays Cookie in the show, tells Andy Howells. “If you’re a fan of music

you’ll just go absolutely nuts for the music and great sci-fi effects as well, it’s a great night out.” Mark describes his char- acter as a “love-lorn low

status character” that has parallels with Cinder- ella’s Buttons. “He falls in love with Miranda who is the love interest when we crash-land on Prospero’s planet,” he says, “She doesn’t love him back and falls in love with the cap- tain of the ship, the char- acter gets a lot of empathy from the audience.” Mark, who is an accom- plished musician ,will be performing a rendition of

a 60s classic in the show. “My big number is She Not There by The Zombies. We put a little twist on it because this is the point in the story when Cookie realises Miranda has fall- en for the captain and not him. He does this anxious version which has a big four-minute-long guitar solo in it.” Mark, who also played a

young John Lennon in the musical Lennon at Liver-

pool’s Royal Court, is a big 1960s fan and is currently relishing his role in the musical. “To play guitar, sing, make people laugh and speak some wonderful Shakespeare verse – it’s a dream job!” Return to the Forbidden Planet runs at Cardiff’s New Theatre between Monday April 20 - 25. SHERMAN Cymru has launched an opportunity for fresh home grown talent to work with the company. The TAITH initiative will

provide new and emerging writers with the opportunity to get advice and feedback on their scripts and hone their writing skills, as well as see their work on the stage. Twice a year, ShermanCym-

ru will invite submissions for 10-minute plays, in Welsh or English, on a specific theme, style or subject – challenging the writer to showtheir talent concisely. Sherman Cymru’s script- reading panel, made up of a range of established Welsh and Wales-based profession- als will be reading all of the submissions and the Sherman Cymru creative team select- ing the final three. The panel will be looking for bold, inventive and original

writers who can appeal and connect to modern audiences. The three that show most po- tential will then be developed with Sherman Cymru’s crea- tive team. The final three chosen scripts will then be per- formed on June 26, with an open discussion with the au- dience after. The first theme for TAITH

is taken from Gary Owen’s new play Iphigenia in Splott, which will be produced by Sherman Cymru from May 8-16, and in light of the forth- coming General Election. Use the theme of Social Up- rising as the spark the imagi- nation. Send Sherman Cymru your bold, exciting and engag- ing 10 minute plays forTAITH by noon Monday on email only to literary@sherman- cymru.co.uk. More details are availabley atwww.shermancymru.co.uk
