Gregory and his apprentice Billy Bradley (Kit Harington) attempt to contain the witch but their heroic efforts culminate in tragedy. As Malkin’s powers grow,

Gregory visits the home of Malcolm and Mam Ward (Timothy Webber, Olivia Williams) and offers the par- ents a small fortune to train theirboyTom(BenBarnes) – the seventh son of a seventh son – as his new apprentice. The Wards agree. The young man begins his tutelage in earnest, aided by Gregory’s troll-like friend Tusk (John DeSantis). Meanwhile, Mal- kin despatches her niece, Alice (Alicia Vikander), to spy on the Spook and his protegee as she gathers her most-trusted allies includ- ing fierce lieutenant Urag (Jason Scott Lee) and blade- wielding warlock Radu (Dji- mon Hounsou). So the Prince throws a lavish ball where Ella makes her grand entrance then disappears as the clock chimes midnight, leaving behind footwear that would surely pose a health and safety risk in any other film. HelenaBonham Carter’s fairy godmother isn’t quite as eccentric as she or we would like as she engineers the film’s best set-piece with a flick of her wand. But Cin- derella will enchant a genera- tion of girls, who dream of donning the tiara of a Disney princess. Rating: Four stars

Brie) is the daughter of com- pany chairman Martin Clark (Craig T Nelson), who is poised to make his future son- in-lawa partner in the firm. James is wrongfully charged with 43 counts of fraud and 30 counts of embez- zlement. The company law- yer (Greg Germann) advises James to plead guilty but he refuses and is subsequently handed a 10-year sentence at a maximum security prison.

With 30 days to prepare for a stint behind bars, James turns to Darnell Lewis (Hart), owner of a car wash busi- ness, who the shamed trader presumes must have served time because he is African- American. In truth, Darnell is a hard-working family man, who intends to build a better future for his wife (Edwina Findley Dickerson) and daughter (Ariana Neal). James offers Darnell 30,000

US dollars to toughen him up, so Darnell passes himself off as a tough-talking men- tor using insider informa- tion gleaned from his jailbird cousin (Tip “T.I.” Harris). Get Hard limps from one moment of uncomfortable, deathly si- lence, where there should be laughter, to the next. Rating: One star

Unexpected twists around every corner

IF LIKE me, you missed The Drop when it originally hit cinema screens last year, then this is your chance to finally catch this gritty crime drama on DVD and Blu-ray. The story follows Bob Saginow-

ski (Tom Hardy) an apparent un- derdog lonely bartender at Cousin Marv’s – a neighbourhood bar in Brooklyn. Bob’s cousin, the eponymous Marv (James Gan- dolfini in his last completed film role), runs the business as a “drop bar,” laundering money through a covert scheme of funnelling cash to local gangsters. Under Marv’s heavy hand, Bob finds himself at the centre of a robbery gone awry when money intended for a Chechen gang is stolen from the bar by masked gunmen. The rob- bery is investigated by cynical police officer Detective Torres (John Ortiz) and while Bob tries to forge a relationship with his neighbour Nadia (Noomi Rapace) he finds himself entwined in an

investigation that digs deep into the neighbourhood’s past where friends, families, and foes all work together to make a living – no mat- ter the cost. The big pull for The Drop is un- doubtedly the multi-layered char- acterisations within the film. No character should ever be taken at face value and there are surprises on every level right through to the final moments. Undoubtedly Tom Hardy and the late James Gan- dolfini are brilliantly cast in the lead roles but there are also strong performances from Noomi Rapace and Matthias Schoenaerts, the latter portraying a ticking time bomb of menace with an air of mystery. The Drop is available on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD now.
