Showtakes an arson attack as centrepiece

AWARD-WINNING chore- ographer Sandra Harnisch- Lacey’s new double-bill TÂN will receive its premiere at The Riverfront, Newport, on Friday February 27. TÂN explores the political

and cultural awakening in Wales over the past century, taking an arson attack in the 1930s as its centrepiece. On September 8 1936, the drama- tist Saunders Lewis, poet Lewis Valentine and novel- ist DJ Williams set fire to the RAF bombing school in Penyberth on the Llyn Pen- insula in North Wales, and gave themselves up at Pwll- heli police station. The trial at Caernarfon failed to agree on a verdict and the case was sent to the Old Bailey in Lon- don. They were sentenced to nine months imprisonment in Wormwood Scrubs. This is used in TÂN to reflect on Wales’s recent cultural jour- ney, as well as to highlight the struggles to preserve cultural and linguistic identities in other countries.

With a moveable set, ar-

chive footage and an original soundtrack by BAFTA-win- ner Tom Raybould, this work explores themes of identity, freedom and the power of transformation. Artistic director Sandra

Harnisch-Lacey said: “Having made Wales my home twelve years ago, I have not only come to appreciate the won- derful culture of the country in which I now live, but, hav- ing moved from abroad and now rarely speaking my own mother tongue, I have come to understand something of what it is to feel the loss of a language and culture. Wales has such a rich cultural her- itage and such a beautiful language, so I want this show to communicate not only the burning pain of loss, but also the hopefulness of reigniting a country’s future”.TÂNis co- produced by The Riverfront and supported by The Arts Council Wales, Coreo Cymru and Barry Memo.
