OFF THE BEATEN TRACK DRIVING HOLIDAYS

W

hen you’re in a rush to reach your destination, French motorways make it easy to eat up the kilometres, but why hurry? One of the greatest pleasures of driving in France is relaxing at the wheel

along quiet roads. So to get the most out of your journey or touring holiday, invest time in a little pre-holiday research, to find the perfect combination of highways and byways. After you arrive on French soil, don’t immediately look for the motorway out of town. Ports like Boulogne and Dieppe,

Caen and St Malo are well worth exploring straight away or slotting into the itinerary for a final treat on your home leg. Head down the fast lane from the Channel ports and you could just about make the Mediterranean in a day, if you share the driving. French motorways are generally less crowded than at home, partly because many French drivers avoid them rather than pay toll charges. In addition to fully-equipped service areas, France’s motorways are also dotted with regular stopping places or aires where you can pull off, take a comfort stop and stretch your legs.
