Inis Nua Theatre presents Present Through A Lens Darkly:

Black Photographers and the Emergence of a People

A film screening

and discussion with Film Director

Thomas A. Harris and Co-Producer

Dr. Deborah Willis

Inspired by Deborah Willis’s book Reflections in Black and featuring works by Carrie Mae Weems, Lorna Simpson, Anthony Barboza, Hank Willis Thomas, Coco Fusco, Lyle Ashton Harris, and many others, Through a Lens Darkly embraces the historical material of African-Americans who were slaves, who fought in the Civil War, were victims of lynch- ings, or were pivotal in the Civil Rights Movement. The film is a cornucopia of Americana that reveals deeply dis- turbing truths about the history of race relations while expressing joy- ous, life-affirming sentiments about the ability of artists and amateurs alike to assert their identity through the photographic lens.
