Parents should be planning more days out rather than bribing kids with technology, says psychology lecturer

“Parents need to incorporate technology into the play options available to children rather than into an item placed on a pedestal”, said Dr Katerina Kantartzis, Lecturer in Psychology at Birmingham City University. “Technology features in any household these days and inevitably children want to use it”, said Katerina in response to new survey findings released by children research specialists Childwise.

Childwise’s 2015 Monitor Report on children’s media use has revealed a surge in the number of tablet computers being used by youngsters and suggests that parents use time on technology devices as a way of rewarding or punishing their children.

“Using a tablet as a reward or threat will make it more desirable to children, which is loosely based on the principle of scarcity, proposed by Cialdini in 1984. The more scarce something is, the more we want it.

“Bribing or threatening with technology could actually make children want to use it even more. Parents need to ensure that they have enough activities available for their children and that they are planning regular days out to stop their young ones from wanting to use technology constantly. If enough activities are being planned, I’m sure we would find that the last thing children want to do is sit on a tablet for hours.”

Most people are now in full swing with regards to the New Year but the fitness regime that so many have started may already have fallen by the way side. One reason for this will be consistency – in my last article I mentioned ‘desire’ before motivation and in some respects, consistency makes motivation happen. So, without consistency, motivation doesn’t happen. This is like many things in life, such as your children’s consistency in learning to spell words correctly. Your child might get it right the first time but to retain the word they still consistently need to practise that word. In this way, some children become lovers of the English Language and for others it’s simply a way to pass information on such as essays, projects etc. Can you remember the last time you went to spell a word and couldn’t remember what the correct spelling was? That’s likely to be due to the lack of consistency in using that word. Martial Arts is similar in that you have to consistently practise techniques for muscle memory to get in a situation where by the technique becomes

second nature, just like driving! First you struggle, then it becomes easier until you become competent, then you don’t think about it as you perform the technique. This is why as I mentioned at the beginning of the article, people stop their new fitness regimes. It’s not that they don’t want to do it, it’s the lack of consistency that prevents them reaching their fitness goals. Here at Yarm Martial Arts Academy we try to get consistency into our students training so they get motivated to come regularly because it then becomes part of their lifestyle. So, in conjunction with Primary Times we are running a competition on Page 9 giving you the chance to win 1 Month of FREE Fitness Lessons for your family! Why not have a go to win some Martial Arts or Fitness Lessons to see if we can get you to achieve your fitness goals or improve your child’s focus and concentration whilst developing that consistency which in turn leads to motivation? It can make your lifestyle a little more stress free!
