Blindsided: A Manager's Guide to Crisis Leadership Author: Bruce Blythe

Book Review by Douglas R. Bender, Sr.

In his book, Blind Sided, this world-renowned crisis consultant Bruce Blythe offers a comprehensive blueprint to guiding a company through the aftermath of a disaster. The tragic events of September 11, 2001, put businesses nationwide on alert; they now know they need to prepare for catastrophes. Blythe offers managers a step-by-step guide to a subject that has intimidated all too many managers, causing them to postpone such preparation…usually to their

detriment.

He guides the reader through a series of worst-case scenarios, from a shooting rampage to a flash flood to a terrorist attack, offering handy checklists and field-proven action tests for quick results. He instructs managers and corporate executives on how best to prepare their teams for a crisis and how to deal with customers, employees, and the media in its aftermath. He explains tactics and preemptive measures that ensure:

* a quick return to work * effective press management * better morale * fewer lawsuits down the line

SCHOOL VIOLENCE – continued Arming Teachers Disarms Planning

Armed Teachers in the Classroom – a Firestorm Insights paper with Harry Rhulen, CEO Firestorm recognizes the ongoing National debate regarding arming school employees with firearms. Since the horrific Sandy Hook shooting, parents, school officials and others have been striving to create safer schools in various ways. Some have questioned gun control while others are focusing on mental health. Various schools are focusing on a different way to help protect our schools: arming teachers and school employees.

For $17,500 and 40 hours of training with Shield Solutions, 10 Missouri school districts have decided to put teachers into training classes. Taught by current law enforcement officers, in these classes two staff members from each school are taught how to use a Glock 19 semi-automatic pistol. Other training topics include weapons maintenance, threat identification, discretionary shooting, one-handed shooting, shooting while moving, barricade shooting and ―the warrior mindset.‖

Although the program is supported by some, many believe it is weak at its core. Principal of Eudora High School in Kansas and president-elect of the National Association of Secondary School Principals, G.A. Buie, believes the program could not be more wrongheaded. ―We would be asking school officials, trained as educators to make a quick transition from teacher to SWAT member, arrive on the scene, assess the situation, overcome the severe nervousness that naturally accompanies a deadly force incident and take immediate action before blood is shed.‖
