Incinerator becomes a political football
A SECOND delay to the Javelin Park incinerator decision has led to accusa- tions of political interfer- ence for electoral gain. It was announced recent-
ly that Secretary of State Eric Pickles would be delaying his decision on the proposed £500million incinerator for a further three weeks. Mr Pickles notified Gloucestershire County Council that he would not be able to make a decision on the Javelin Park appeal by the end of November as was previously agreed. HetoldGCCthat in order
to alloweveryone involved the time to deal with new planning policy and new planning practice guid- ance the decision has been pushed back from its origi-
nal November 30 deadline to Monday, December 22. This second delay has
sparked outrage from the opposition parties in Stroud who claim it is po- litically motivated with the sole intention of pro- tecting Stroud MP Neil Carmichael. David Drew, Labour’s
parliamentary candidate for Stroud, said if the de- cision is delayed much longer it will end up be- ing made after the Gen- eral Election, which is less than 32 weeks away. “It feels as if the dead-
line is now vanishing into the distance and if it con- tinues to be delayed until after the election then the Tories will not have to face any fallout from the result beforehand.
“It’s beginning to feel
like a political decision for that reason.” Meanwhile
county
councillor Sarah Lunnon (Green, Stroud) also said that the decision to delay is based on protecting Neil Carmichael in next year’s election. “Rather than support
my call for councillors to be given the costs of delay and cancellation of the incinerator so we could determine if the project was viable the Labour group instead voted with Tory support to write to Eric Pickles asking if he would mind hurrying up,” she said. “Let’s hope the Secretary
of State has a recycling bin because that’s where their letter ended up.”
Project restores canal’s previous image
A 300m length of the Cotswold Canals near Stroud has been restored to its former glory and the towpath alongside reopened. The £110,000 contract was carried out
by Land & Water Services and involved dredging 4500 tonnes of material from the canal between Lodgemore Bridge and Wallbridge Lower Lock. The mate- rial was deposited on the bank of the
canal, avoiding the need to dispose of it and the environmental impact of several hundred lorry journeys. The dredging, together with ongoing construction of a bypass channel around Wallbridge Lower Lock, was made pos- sible by a generous £100,000 grant from The Veolia Environmental Trust, award- ed through the Landfill Communities Fund.

BONFIRE night can often be terrifying for pets but Abby Wharton, of Corinium Vets in Cirencester has some tips. “Make sure all of the doors
and windows are closed, and provide cats with many fresh
litter trays so they have op- tions if they begin to panic. “Provide dogs with plenty
of distractions such as toys, chews and games. “You can also use phero- mone sprays and diffusers.”
