New businesses in the Portsmouth area are being offered the chance to move into a welcoming, professional and creative environment aimed specifically at supporting the entrepreneurial success of new businesses.

Innovation Space, a University of Portsmouth initiative, has been established and designed to help entrepreneurs turn clever ideas into brilliant businesses initiatives.

Recognising a gap in the market for local entrepreneurs, the university has created Innovation Space, a project aimed at bringing together entrepreneurs and start-ups to support economic regeneration and prosperity in Portsmouth.

The members’ community is intended to nurture start-ups in the crucial first phase of a promising new future by offering them the chance to work with like-minded individuals who can offer support and introduce them to networks which will ultimately help them grow.

PLUS • Technology • Outsourcing • Taxation • Alternative Lending

Andy Mew, operations manager, explained: “We believe in a philosophy of no distractions and no barriers at Innovation Space. Our open-plan layout is designed to foster conversations between members.

It is our

intention that those who have recently stepped out of running their business in the bedroom office or from the kitchen table have a friendly face to talk to, away from the distractions of home, where informal advice can be shared by those who may have encountered similar issues or are further along in their business career ventures.“

Innovation Space also offers a free events’ programme designed to support both new and existing businesses in the local area, by covering core topics that will provide the tools companies need to make their ventures a success.

“Our events programme is intended to facilitate networking opportunities that will open new avenues for our members and provide potential leads to help their businesses develop,“ continued Mew.

“We are constantly looking for new opportunities to support the business community and as Portsmouth focuses on

building a strong and sustainable economy, Innovation Space hopes to be at the heart of the city, nurturing the success of entrepreneurs and innovation start-ups through the support of the university.“

Businesses currently residing in Innovation Space include business consultants, big data analysts, social media platform developers, graphic designers, website and web tool development, photographers, mobile app developers and marketing companies.

The weekly events’ programme, called Wednesday Workshop, covers topics such as marketing, financial advice, writing business plans, intellectual property, applying for business awards, how to network and working with the University of Portsmouth. It also runs free monthly financial and intellectual property advice clinics using local businesses.

Mew concluded: “Many of our members say that one of the appeals is our link to the university and the opportunities this offers.

“Through access to our staff and students, we are able to offer greater access to local knowledge, such as funding opportunities, new initiatives and university programmes that can help establish companies as genuine providers of goods and services.“

Friendshake

Start-up company Friendshake has developed an online platform to draw together social media users’ likes and dislikes, facilitating meet-ups and group activity at a local level. The company has been developing its platform at the Innovation Space, with a soft launch imminent.

KnowNow

KnowNow is a big data company which helps organisations create value in real time from their assets and everyday activities through Internet connectivity. As a result of being at Innovation Space, KnowNow is in ongoing discussions with the University of Portsmouth and the University of Southampton about its products, and their development and commercialisation.
