all you hoped him to be. On top of that, you may have an emotional attachment to the horse and his character, which always makes it harder to move him on. An important lesson I learned over the years is that it takes just as much time to train a bad horse as it does to train a good one. Today the level of competition globally requires an unbelievably competitive horse that has both talent and athleticism and is impeccably well-trained.
SYNDICATION There’s also another alternative way to obtain a top horse. Occasionally I rally a group to purchase a horse already competing at the upper levels. Otis Barbotiere, Trading Aces, Shamwari 4 and Pancho Villa are four of my horses that were purchased with syndicates organized for that purpose. Buying a horse that is already produced does not
guarantee a high success rate for his new owners, generally speaking. You can find a horse for sale at the top level, but you have to be aware that he’s probably for sale for a good
reason. On the positive side of the coin, you can have a good look at his record and realize where his strengths and weaknesses are. In addition, such a horse will allow you to compete at the big shows a lot sooner than a youngster you have to bring along for years and years. Never underestimate the ability of the person who’s been
riding and training the horse. I’ve learned that I should never buy a made horse thinking I could do a better job than the previous rider. I prefer to do these types of horses in syndicates, first because I do not know too many individuals willing to finance a single horse at that expense, and also because if the horse does not work out, it’s a little easier when everyone is taking a smaller financial hit. Every top rider has their own style and goals, but this is mine and it has proven to work— most of the time!
