Flynn’s DOTTIE MAE [32’ John Luke; 186- hp Isuzu] jumped into the lead and went on for the win. David Grant’s EASY MONEY won Class C. There was just two boats in Class D and Craig Stewart’s CARL & CO. [Wayne Beal 36; 320-hp Caterpillar] was just able to get by Justin Papkee’s PULL N PRAY [Repco 37; 325-hp Caterpillar] for the win. Next was Class E had three boats on the line, but did anyone have enough for Ed Shirley’s MISS KARLEE [Mitchell Cove 32, 440-hp Sisu]? When the fl ag dropped she


jumped into the lead and held on for the win. All the way from New Hampshire came Ed Torosian and MS. ROSE to compete in Class F and was the odds on favourite and did not disappoint the odds makers. There was only one entrant in Class G, Zach Donnell’s HAPPY HOUR [Mitchell Cove 35; 500-hp John Deere]. Next up was Class H (436 to 550 hp, 36 feet to 40 feet), which had fi ve racers on the line. line: 4 GIRLS, MOJO INC., THUNDER- BOLT, and WHISTLIN’ DIXIE. THUN- DERBOLT jumped into the lead and crossed with a three boat length lead followed by MOJO INC. and WHISTLIN’ DIXIE. The fi nal weekend of lobster boat racing was already upon us. We had three races cancel this year and when that happened the Maine Lobster Boat Racing Association (MLBRA) asked the race organizers of Long Island if they would like to be a points race, which they agreed to. This would make them and the MS Lobster Boat Races at Portland on the last weekend of the season (16 and 17 August) that much more important and it was hoped it would bring out more racers. Sign-ups began at 1300 hrs. on the ferry dock and were slow at fi rst, but that did not last. When all was said and done we had 55 entrants, 17 more than last year. There were several boats signed up that had not raced before. Al Strout of Harpswell entered his MERGANSER in Gasoline Class B. She is a classic having been built by Will Frost in the late 1940s. She is 34 feet six inches in length and is powered with a 225-hp 318 Chrysler. Mike Hanson sold VENTURE [South Shore 30; 130-hp John Deere] and replaced her with JANE & CA- MILLE, a Young Brothers 30 powered with a 200-hp Cummins. He would be entered in Diesel Class A. Jeff Patterson from Scituate, MA brought his SIMPLE MAN, a Stanley 36 powered with a 210-hp Cummins. She would race in Diesel Class B. Pat Ducal of Long Island entered his LESLIE & ELLEN, a Crowley 28, 265-hp Cummins, in Diesel Class C. Justin Papkee entered PULL N PRAY, Repco 37, 325-hp 3208 Caterpillar in Diesel Class D. Olsen’s GREAT NORTHERN, but unfortu- nately they did not sign up and give us the boat’s particulars.


First up was the three work boat classes.


In Class A had two boats on the line and T. J. Flynn’s boat [14’ Alumacraft, 25-hp Johnson] was the winner. For the last couple of years there has been an on-going battle between Al Strout’s CLUSTA [Lowe 18; 40- hp Tohatsu] and Marshall Spears’ J-BIRD [16’; 90-hp], with J-BIRD always the winner in Class B and today was no different. All summer long we had been hearing about Steve Johnson’s newest creation, WILD WOMAN, which was signed up in Class C. He had removed the Sunbird, the car, cut the bottom off an O’Day sailboat, and glassed it onto the hull. He powered it with a 454 Chev- rolet V-8, but that had developed problems so he hooked up twin 200-hp outboards. Un- fortunately she did not make the line as she had developed an issue with her very special double ‘D’s rudder. The favourite was Dave Johnston’s CASCO MISS [Eastern 22, 130- hp Honda] and she was up against fi ve other competitors. CASCO MISS had a two boat length lead as she crossed the fi nish line. Next up were the Gasoline Classes. There was only one boat in Class A D&L Boatworks’ CRY BABY so that class was combined with Class B, which had two en- trants, MERGANSER and Skee Dennison’s ELIZABETH [Repco 30; 350 Chevrolet] won by MERGANSER. In both Class C and Class D there was only one entrant. BLACK DIAMOND was entered in Class C and THUNDERBOLT in Class D and each got their win.


In the Diesel Classes the fi rst up was


Class A, which was won by LYNN MARIE. There were just two boats in Class B. Tim
