Social media tools will continue to impact employment screening as the search engines and sites like LinkedIn continue to attract business users and Facebook and Twitter try to find the secret sauce to become a mainstream business conduit. We believe that managers everywhere are using these tools to check out applicants on their own. The challenge for businesses is to find a way to harness these new social media tools to maximize their benefit and minimize the risk.

Global screening continues to grow albeit at a slow pace. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, approximately, 13% of the current U.S. population consists of immigrants, couple this with the growing number of workers that are from other countries or in the United States on work visas and a large number of U.S. citizens that have spent time working abroad in multinational firms. Speaking of risk, studies have shown that education and employment fraud for international applicants can run as high as 25% which means that 1 in 4 applicants you screen may have false credentials.

Research has shown that only about 15 percent of respondents indicated their organizations perform international background checks on individuals who have lived, worked, or been educated outside of the U.S. This means that there is a tremendous upside potential for private investigators to work with their clients to fill this void.3

Any future plans dealing with selecting a background screening firm should consider the emerging issues mentioned above. We hope this information is valuable in helping you to select a background screening firm.
