Fall survivor thanks doctor

A TREE surgeon who survived a 40ft fall from a cherry picker has met the Kent, Surrey&Sussex Air Ambulance doctorwhowent to his aid, and vowed to raise funds for the charity. Father-of-two Trevor McBean

(38), from Staplehurst, was moni- toring power lines on the A21 at Lamberhurst when the elevated platform hewasworking on tipped over. The subcontractorwas sent crash-

ing through a clump of trees which broke his fall, but he still suffered a fractured skull and broken wrist. South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) was first on scene to treatMrMcBean before the air ambulance arrived. Trevor spent twoweeks in King’s College Hospital in London, and has since made a good recovery. He is now planning a tandem skydive to raise funds for the charity. The Air Ambulance’s doctor,

Steph Tilston, helped sedate Trevor at the scene before taking him to King’s College Hospital in London where scans showed he had poten-

Dr Steph Tilston and pilot Capt Kevin Goddard with Trevor McBean and his family

tially fatal bleeding on the brain. Along with his fiancée and two children, he visited the helicopter base at Marden to meet Dr Tilston for the first time since his accident. Trevor is preparing for his skydive on May 30 – his birthday. He added: “I’m quite excited

about it but I’ll probably be more nervous when I get on the plane.” To sponsor Trevor, go to

downsmail.co.uk Crash driver failed to stop

LEONARD Boarer (58), of FourWents, Langley, was banned from driving for 26 months after he admitted drink-driving and failing to stop after a collision. Boarer, who admitted the offences, was also ordered to carry out

100 hours unpaid work and pay £85 costs and a £60 victim sur- charge. Mid Kent Magistrates heard that he was the driver of a Mit- subishi Shogun, which failed to stop following a collision in Burberry Lane, Maidstone, on February 28. The same day, he gave a breath test of 99mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35mg. The ban can be reduced by 198 days if he completes an awareness course.

Plan brewing Hotel appeal

CONSENT has been given to con- vert a redundant farm building into a micro-brewery in Boughton Monchelsea. Maidstone Council granted plan-

ning permission for BB Firmin Farms to change the use of the 257sqm shed at Campfield Farm, in Haste Hill Road. The brewery initially expects to produce about 164 litres per week (four casks), with this forecast to rise to nearly 300 litres perweek in three years. The council restricted on-site ac-

tivity, including deliveries to and from the site, to8am-7pmweekdays, 8am-1pm Saturdays and not on Sun- days and bank holidays to ensure a satisfactory level of amenity for res- idents of Campfield Cottages.

A PROPOSAL to replace a former hotel in East Sutton with three four-bedroom detached homes will go to appeal. Applicant Phil Paine lost pa-

tience with Maidstone Council’s delay in determining the proposal for The Shant Hotel in East Sutton Road, which has been closed since it was destroyed by a fire in Sep- tember 2002. He has asked for a planning in- spector to decide. The council says it would have refused the scheme for introducing “unsustainable residential devel- opment where future occupants would be reliant on private cars, and which would harm the charac- ter and appearance of the country- side”.
