THE BULLY AT WORK

Ambush or SOP? ©2014 Gail Pursell Elliott

Just this week I had a phone call from a police officer who had been mobbed by fellow officers in the department. This may seem incredible,

but no industry is immune including law enforcement. What happened to make this person become a target? It was a not so simple case of jealousy. This person, who happened to have a college degree while other coworkers did not, had come up with an idea and was sent to get training that was brought back for incorporation into serving the community. Rather than applauding the idea, coworkers began to look for things to criticize not about the new program, but about the officer. What may look like special treatment for whatever reason may cause consternation on the part of colleagues and this can occur on any level of an organization. Reasons may include the competitive nature of the work environment or the personalities of the people involved. Another scenario may involve seemingly innocent or offhand comments planted by someone wishing to engineer a mobbing. Often when a professional is an achiever he or she may inadvertently cause others to feel threatened if comparisons are made. Rather than applauding positive contributions throughout the organization and continuing the trend for improvement through positive competition, the achievements of others are taken as personal slights. Those with this view may begin to do whatever they can to discredit the target.

The person begins to be held to a different standard than others, which is one of the warning signals that a mobbing is underway.

The existing interpersonal dynamics of the organizational culture is a key factor of the process.

If people feel that their contributions are held up for comparison, are not valued, or are overlooked they will take offense at someone else getting recognition that benefits the organization as a whole. Someone wanting to start a mobbing can easily prey on this type of climate and generally is quite aware of hurt feelings that can be capitalized on rather than healed or addressed in a proactive manner.
