Safety Scotland is a safe and secure country to live in and this is highlighted by the fact that, unlike most countries, police officers in Scotland do not carry firearms – except at airports. Since the restructure of the police into one integrated organisation, Police Scotland now employs 17,324 police officers – a rise of more than 1,000 compared with 2007. Crime in Scotland is decreasing and figures published by the Scottish Government in June 2013 show that the total number of crimes fell by 13 per cent between 2011-12 and 2012-13, bringing the crime rate to its lowest level in nearly 40 years.
