Mayor-making part of new town procession

RESIDENTS of Maidstone are being encouraged to get involved in a new civic celebration. In previous years, mayor-making

going green PARKING patrols in Maidstone are going green, with the introduction of bicycles in Maidstone. The initiative will allow civil en- forcement officers (CEOs) to re- spond quicker to inconsiderate parking or faults with pay and dis- play machines. Four CEOs have received ad-

vanced-level cycling training and have been carrying out cycle pa- trols since February. They also cycle to work, cutting about 900 return journeys into Maidstone per year. Maidstone Council’s cabinet member for transport, Cllr Stephen Paine, who is pictured with one of the CEOs, said: “Replacing a mo- bile van with cycle patrols will save 18,000 miles of vehicle travel and emissions each year.”

has been held on aWednesday and the civic and freedom parade on a Sunday. This year, for the first time, a com-

bined event will be held in the form of a Civic Saturday, on June 7, in the hope it will be a bigger celebration for more people. The town’s military contingents

will assemble in front of County Hall at 10.45am, prior to a march alongWeek Street, to join the civil- ian contingents at St Faith’s Street. A military band will play in Ju-

bilee Square following the council’s AGM and the new Mayor – Cllr Richard Thick – will be presented to the crowds in Jubilee Square by the town crier at 11am. The 36 Engineer Regiment will exercise their Freedom of the Bor- ough to march through the town with bayonets fixed, assembling in front of County Hall at 10.45am and marching along Week Street to St Faith’s Street.

The parade will leave the Week Street/High Street junction at 11.30am, march down the High Street into Mill Street, finishing at All Saints’ Church for a civic serv- ice at noon. The mayoral party will walk to

All Saints’ Church behind the pa- rade, with the mayor leading the procession in a horse-drawn car- riage.

Union flags will be handed out to

the public towave along the route. Civic Day celebrations are planned throughout the day in Ju- bilee Square and the Lower High Street pedestrian areas. Cllr Malcolm Greer, cabinet member for economic and commer- cial development, said: “This is the latest initiative from the council and the Town Team. “The High Streetwork is finished

and we have the magnificent Ju- bilee Square which lends itself to events such as this. Maidstone has a great heritage and some magnifi- cent buildings, and this is just one example of how we can acknowl- edge all of that.”
